[Build help] Home router/server

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I'm looking to build a router/all-purpose server for personal use and a friend of mine pointed me to this forums with the words "a lot of really pro people hang out there" so here I am.

Requirements:
- 2 2TB drives in a RAID1 array
- 2 NIC (my ISP only allows a single machine to connect to the modem - this server will do NAT and provide IP addresses (via DHCP) to all PCs in my home network.)

Priorities:
- Price. I'm trying to not go too crazy.
- Noise. This build is supposed to be left running without interruption, so I'm trying not to add a consistent background noise to my room.

Now that that is out of the way, I've already compiled a small list of parts that might fit. I have close to zero experience with hardware beyond small maintenance tasks, however, so I'm open to any suggestions. Feel free to point out if I'm completely wrong.

MoBo: Asus C60M1-I
HDD: 2x WD AV-GP 2TB SATA 3GB/s
RAM: Kingstom 4GB DDR3
NIC: TP-Link Gigabit PCIe. I don't expect this choice to be of importance, really. Please point out if I'm wrong.
PSU: This one's the main question for me.

As I stated above, I have two main priorities with this build - noise and price. The way I understand this, a PSU with passive cooling would have minimal noise, but the price is quite a bit higher. On the other hand, I've been told that a regular corsair low-Watt PSU would produce hardly any noise either due to my parts consuming hardly any power.

Thus, the following questions arise:
- How noticeable is the difference in noise here, really?
- Does the choice of PSU have any impact on how much power my build actually consumes?
- How would the Corsair influence required case size? (I'd prefer keeping the build somewhat compact.)

I'd be grateful for any input you can offer. Again, feel free to point out any complete retard-ness I have committed. As far as hardware goes, I'm very much a newbie.

Passive and a Corsair PSU with bugger all load? Probably zero. Although maybe we can get away from Corsair and pick a power supply from here that is fairly low wattage: http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies/0_100

For this server you should not need more than 400W and that's probably maximum. At low loads, good quality PSUs will run their fan at a very low RPM and in some cases switch it off altogether. I guarantee any noise you hear won't be from the PSU if you pick one from that thread smile.gif

- Does the choice of PSU have any impact on how much power my build actually consumes?

It can indeed. A lower efficiency PSU will draw more wattage at the wall. But as for whether it impacts if the components inside change their consumption then, no.

- How would the Corsair influence required case size? (I'd prefer keeping the build somewhat compact.)

Unless its some weird form factor PSU (which you won't generally see for the wattage you'll require), case size won't be impacted - assuming you're building mATX or ATX in a mid/full-tower.
Oh wait, that board is mini-ITX.

What case did you have in mind? Anything I've said up to this point is really for mATX/ATX builds...
Also that board won't do RAID.

Also I can't stand TP-Link NICs for anything more than simple desktop use. But that's just personal preference. It depends what chip it uses too... it's probably a Realtek which should be OK, but I prefer Intel (again, personal preference).

NICs are the most important parts of a router. Just get the cheapest Intel PCIe NICs off ebay or newegg. Something like this is very good.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

I'm not sure. I mean, I could use a regular PC case, anything smaller is just a bonus.

Hm, I was under the impression that you could establish a RAID array at a software (OS) level, too? (The server will be running some sort of linux in init3, most likely an OpenSUSE. A quick search showed me a few threads discussing Software-RAID1 on that OS.) Am I mistaken here? If so, what alternate MoBo do you recommend?

The price for PCIe NICs is pretty negligible. I just picked the first one I found. I'll change that.

PS: I'll go look through the PSU FAQ now. Thanks for the link.

Thanks a lot. I wasn't aware the choice of NIC made that much of a difference.

Well seeing as it is a mini-ITX board, you could use a mini-ITX case (which usually have inbuilt PSUs, however you might be limited with drive space). I don't know of any regular desktop cases that'll mount a mini-ITX board. Someone else might need to chime in here!
But if you want to use a smaller regular PC case, we could recommend a mATX build if you give us a budget smile.gif

Oh right yes software RAID is no problem in that case. I'm still stuck in hardware world... wink.gif

I'm trying not to exceed somewhere around 550 euros here, at least not by too much.

PS: Do you think this PSU would be a good choice? It's available quite cheaply at a local vendor.

At first glance, yes, could definitely go lower. Is there a website you could link us (preferably in your currency so I don't have to mess with conversions tongue.gif )

I'm using this. Not sure if you'll be able to find your way around, however, as it's in German (and I don't think they have an English version available).

Looking good, thanks a lot. So the only question that remains is whether you can mount the mini-ITX board into a case large enough to suit the PSU and both HDDs, and if not, which board I should use instead. Again, I have no real idea what I'm doing, so I'd very much appreciate suggestions.
