Did "The War Z" ripoff "DayZ"? Discussion inside.

Ok, I was not the one who came up with the following content in regards to supporting the notion that The War Z ripped off DayZ. A man on Facebook by the name, Robby Naruske Blontrock, wrote the following posts as comments on the Facebook page of War Z in their link redirecting to their story about War Z vs DayZ located on their forums. A News topic was created on OCN about it and is located HERE.

These comments on their Facebook were deleted within a few hours, but I managed to save and put it together last night before going to sleep.

I thought it would be best to avoid cluttering up other threads regarding either game with this discussion and instead just try to contain this topic to this thread. Feel free to discuss these comments, and your thoughts below.

I'd also like to mention, before anyone else does, that the name is not a ripoff of DayZ. The game is by the same minds who created "The War Inc." and so, it's only a natural progression that they take that name and fit it to this game (since it uses the same engine with changes made), hence we arrive at "The War Z."

On the War Z website (www.thewarz.com), on the bottom of the page the following is written:

©2011-2012 OP Productions LLC. Developed by Hammerpoint Interactive.

I tried to find out more about these companies, but could not find anything about them. There is no website for "OP Productions, LLC" or for "Hammerpoint Interactive." Hammerpoint Interactive did not make any other games, besides War Z, which they are working on right now. It seems that these companies do not exist. Especially about OP Productions LLC nothing is written on the internet.

I tried to find out which company (or companies) is responsible for the development of War Z. In a news article by "VG 24/7" they mention the name "Arktos Interactive."
-- Source: http://www.vg247.com/2012/08/01/the-war-z-pulls-in-over-100000-closed-beta-registrations-in-24-hours/#more-281771

This company does have a website and the only title it is responsible for is apparently a free FPS called "The War Inc."

Searching the War Inc. forums I found a thread announcing a game with zombies in it, written by a certain Sergey Titov.
-- Source: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache%3AumA4gxOJlhcJ%3Aforums.thewarinc.com%2Farchive%2Findex.php/t-9604.html+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk

Googling Sergey Titov shows that he is responsible for 5 games, one of which is "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing," which is known as the worst game ever made. Sergey had no active part in producing Big Rigs, though his engine formed the base. Apparently what he does (or did) is find computer programmers in countries in Eastern Europe and then license a game engine to them to make a game for a very small budget (think 15,000 USD). An "interesting concept" which he has been executing for many years now.

It appears that Sergey always writes in broken English. IT also appears that he is a former employee of Riot Games (League of Legends) and is currently working for Arktos Entertainment and Warmongers Group (responsible for The War Inc.).

More info about Sergey Titov here:

Now, enough about Sergey Titov and his past. Here comes the interesting part, in the forum post on War Inc. forums, Titov says the following:

What it means for War Inc. community ? First of all - we'll invite all of our active players to participate in Alpha test. Second - ( looks like game will be solf as pay per play product for like $20 or something ) - you'll get special offer if tyou decide to buy it. And third - if you'll got into game and will have \certain items bought permanently in War Inc ( heroes, certain weapons ) - they will be available as unlocked items in zombie game as well.?

So smile.gif - couple weeks ago they sent us video showcasing extra cool idea - huge open world infested with zombies. And they asked us - can be make changes to the engine so it be capable of supporting like 500-1000 players on the same map plus thousands of zombies at same time. We've been talking about what they want to do, discussed ideas and right now they're making kinds proof of concept - first ever persistent world zopmbie survival MMO smile.gif.

Titov says here that the production studio Hammerpoint Interactive only started conceptualizing "a few weeks ago," which means April or May 2012.

I also found the unedited pres release about War Z's new website, which you can find here: http://pastebin.com/g5HZ4q7L

This is the last line of the press release:

Arktos Entertainment will publish The War Z through OP Productions, LLC, a newly created subsidiary.

SO that's why nobody can find anything about OP Productions, LLC. They created a completely new company for the game. Another proof that War Z was not in development "for many years," like Titov claims.

Now let's look at the social media accounts of War Z:
Youtube - totally empty. Zero activity, no videos. Created on July 19th of 2012. http://www.youtube.com/user/TheWarZMMO
Twitter - some activity, also created on July 19th of 2012. http://twitter.com/The_War_Z
Facebook - first post on July 18th of 2012. Note - the "started in 2011" is something users can create artificially. this is not the true creation date of the Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/warzmmo
Domain name - created on May 24th of 2012, registered to Sergey Titov.

tl;dr: Even the executive producer of the game admits several times they only started working on the game as early as May 2012. Tracking the website and social media proves this. War Z tries to thrive on DayZ's success by implementing features and most major suggestions and future features of DayZ, and trying to rush out their product before a standalone DayZ version can be delivered, in the hope that many people waiting for DayZ will buy it.

For the lols, aren't they both just ripping ideas from Robert Kirkman anyways? And it's not like zombies is a protected work. Anyways, as in Hollywood films get created all the time within the same time period. There isn't a time clock on gestation of ideas and that idea is hardly original.

No.

Especially considering that they're using their own engine (which means that they're going to constantly be trying to improve it between projects anyways, so the increased playable area/ players per server could have been done before they decided "zombie"), experienced devs can build content really, really fast. Bug fixing is the most time consuming development aspect. If War Z launches extremely buggy, there's no hiding that they did a short dev cycle.

Until I see concrete proof to the contrary, Day Z is the only reason War Z was developed.

dayz is a very outdated game/mod, glitchy, and there aren't really that many zombies.
i have watched many people play this game and it's hours of running around doing pretty much nothing.

if you really want to poke the bear, lets just say every zombie game from the release date after world at war (cod) is a rip off of their game.

people take others ideas, just how it goes.
look at movies, they are always she same format.
girl love story movies almost always have 1 girl being a tramp with two guys, disguised as heart felt struggle on whom to choose.
guy love stories always have some "nobody" that mini-quests and has a blow out night or week that drops his balls so he has the guts to ask out the girl.
so on and so forth.

i say just be happy something new is coming out. better yet blame ARMA2 creators for not steeping up to the plate to give you something worth playing with zombies in it..

When an outright clone of the original game in a genre gets announced 4 months after the original found insane success....

Left4Dead, COD's Zombie mode, and Day Z are all different genres that simply use Zombies. War Z is Day Z with a new coat of paint (which, we were told Day Z was getting long before anyone knew of War Z).

Yeah, pure gamers probably can just shrug it off. Those of us involved in game design are infuriated by one company acting completely spineless, stealing another's game, and then not even having the ability to verbally distinguish the new game from the one they've cloned it from. Seriously, at this point, the given differences by the War Z devs is that their game has a different map, a different engine, and different controls (controls which will likely be identical to COD/BF3's, just a few extra buttons for inventory). Take a guess at what Rocket promised when he announced that the game would go standalone (which happened over a month before War Z reared its head)...

Agreed. From a gamer's standpoint, it's just another zombie game, the likes of which have been flooding the market like no other genre lately. It's not expected that we would see a significant difference between any of them after being so saturated with it over the last 5 years. From a development standpoint it looks like a step-by-step copy of Day Z.

However, this is not uncommon, and is going to happen much more in the coming years.

Simple fact: There are a lot of programmers and studios in eastern europe and asia who will contract themselves out for anything under the sun, to anyone willing to pay them their standard fee. If I wanted to rip off battlefield 3, and had the money, I could hire a group of people in the Ukraine and have it done in 9 months, with enough deviation from the original game to avoid copyright and trademark violations. Only thing I would need after that is a means of distributing it under the name Warfield: Third act.

Now. About this thread. It needs to disappear. The more attention this game gets the more it's going to encourage like-minded people to pull stunts like this. The only bad press is no press. This thread is actively advertising a ganked game.

This thread is also actively calling attention the mod that spawned this ganked game. This thread won't change anything in regards to how likely people are to attempt to ripoff future games. Heck, this game didn't ripoff anything except ideas, they have their own engine that they've been using and are making changes for to support the gameplay.

If War Z was stealing assets from Arma II and modifying them to avoid copyright, you'd have a point. This is basically the equivalent of EA resurrecting the MOH series because of the continued success of COD.

The people making War Z are using assets from the game War Inc, which was made from the same company (and where War Z derives its name). The purpose of this thread is more to discuss which came first, since the developers claim War Z.was first.

:/

I dont know what to think.

I just hope that DayZ standalone will use the arma 3 engine as the arma 2 engine is buggy as hell among other stuff

What i do hate about DayZ is its basically a long winded PVP game and gives you no reason to kill zombies.
