Microsoft Virtual World 3D releases Beta

Thread Starter
Watching the news, and saw a clip about microsofts new mapping program to compete with Google earth.

The cool thing about it is the building are all 3D and are skined to look like the real building.

Link, you need to be running IE7 to use it. download the plugin on the left of the page.

Holy smack, nice!

Pic of my school, the date is not too old, the front wall of science building was fixed last year 2005-2006, it's there in the pic!

Hmmm, I just clicked the "3D maps" link on the left-side and got a pop-up saying (as noted) that I needed to run it in Internet Explorer.
.... Figures that MS would limit the capabilities of the service to their own products. Very not user-friendly to be brand-limited.

However! The popup noted that "to use this feature, open Live Local Search in Windows Internet Explorer version 6 or 7. "

Heading into IE (version 6), and going to Install the Virtual Earth 3D beta software, you'll receive the following message:
Code:
Install Virtual Earth 3D (Beta)
You have been redirected to this page because you do not have a current
version of Virtual Earth 3D installed.

Virtual Earth 3D brings you another step closer to knowing “what it is like
out there”. You can search, browse, and organize local information viewed
in three dimensions, just the way it exists in the real world. This helps you
more effectively find the data that is relevant, making Live Search more
useful than ever. Even better—it’s just plain fun!

What do you want to do?
Install -- Installs Virtual Earth 3D. Before proceeding, please review the system
requirements. Increased performance will be noted on more powerful systems.

System requirements:

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, or
the Windows Vista operating system.
Windows Internet Explorer version 6 or 7, with security settings set to
enable or prompt Microsoft ActiveX controls.
A video card with 32 MB or greater video memory that is compatible with
Microsoft DirectX 9.
Hardware acceleration must be set to Full. For more information, see Help.
Recommended:
Broadband connectivity.

Cancel -- No software will be installed. You will be returned to 2D view.
The install file is approximately 508KB and contains a EULA (it's Microsoft, of course it contains a EULA!), and downloads two "required files" after EULA approval. The second of the two files seems to be rather large (and took longer that I would have expected to download over a Cable connection).

--------------------------------------------------------
Okay, so apparently the huge file I was downloading was .NET Framework v2.0. So, caveat emptor! If you don't already have it, it will be downloaded as part of the Virtual Earth 3D beta and be installed on your machine. (This is not necessarily a bad thing, it's just a large file!)
Following this, you'll be redirected to a *.msi installer file (yet another thing to download before using Virtual Earth) weighing in at 5.3MB.
[So far it seems like all I'm doing is download after download... I'm beginning to wonder why this is worth it, as a service, when with Google Earth, or the lesser-known NASA World Wind, you don't have to install anything to use the web-service.]

After everything finally installs, and you reload IE, you'll be greeted with a default world-view, surprisingly alike to Google Earth's.
Interesting 3D mock-ups... But as for supremacy between Google Earth and Microsoft's Live Search with Virtual Earth 3D Beta? I dunno.

But I'm sure leaning to Google Earth for the simplicity of setup and use at the beginning.

Google Earth has that worthless watermark over it, unless you buy Pro. But anyhow, with the advancement of satellite modeling, the next thing you know is you'll be playing game in a city and modeled exactly where you live!

Google earth owns this. My house is just a blurry black and white smudge in this but in google it's color and you can see who's parked out front.

With Google Earth, you dont have to be forced to use Internet Explorer. You dont even need a browser at all.

Therefore, Google Earth > MS Virtual World 3D
