Hey guys, So it seems after I received my 6950 (as the best gift I've ever gotten) my cpu is now bottlenecked. My question is should I upgrade and if so what to? Like Intel or just a six core or new board too? Just curious what you guys would do in my shoes. I should also mention that I can't seem to get my 955 past 3.6. Thanks for your help.

Wait, your CPU is bottlenecked, or your CPU IS the bottleneck? When I paired the two up, even at 3.9Ghz, I wasn't able to get 99% out of it in about half my games.
Which kind of games anyways?
But if you want to upgrade, even a cheap P67 and a Sandy i3 would be faster.
i5 2500k + Z77 board (for future upgrades). Or, a Z68/P67 if you don't plan on upgrading.
I will tell you this, for gaming, don't bother with a 3930k/3960x. Mine isn't even breaking into a speed walk in every single game I have; complete overkill.

I don't think i3 would be a worthy upgrade over an overclocked Phenom II.

are you stuck at 3.6ghz because youre still running the stock cooler ? even c2 revisions usually get to 3.8 without problems, just a bit of tweaking.

Overclock the NB to 2800-3000 Mhz, and get a better cooler. Something like the $30 Evo will do wonders. Or get yourself a nice AM3+ Motherboard and sit tight for another 3 months while Piledriver drops.

Something else is wrong with your OC. A 212 is more than enough to get yours to 3.8+. What are your settings?

I have Ran a 955,965, and a 1090t with a 6950 and have not witnessed any bottleneck what-so-ever in any game and I probably have most of the latest titles! At 3.8Ghz, if a bottleneck is experienced, it is being caused by something else. I have never gamed with any of these CPU's at stock speeds.
I started to see a slight bottleneck with a single GTX 580 but only about 5 - 7% on average. Dual graphics cards were a different story! Crossfire 6870's were never going above 87% when paired with a 955, 1055t, or a 1090t at 4.0Ghz
I ran dual MSI GTX 5770 Hawk edition cards (In my opinion, the best 5770), with a 955 at 4.0Ghz and I did not see any bottleneck.

What do you mean bottleneck? Let's assume your referring to an intensive game like BF3...my 6950 is at 100%, CPU is at around 90% at 3.4GHz...so it is fine with the 6950.
What %age is your 6950 running at?

By bottleneck I am referring to GPU usage. In most if not all modern games, at resolutions above 1650 x 1080, GPU usage should be at 99% -100% at most graphic intense periods if it is correctly being fed instructions from the CPU!
CPU usage can wildly vary from game to game and will be reduced at higher resolutions! Not uncommon to see GPU usage at 99% and CPU usage at 40% on A 3930K, 3770k, etc!
GPU usage at 1920 x 1080 resolution in a game such as Metro 2033 should most always be at 99% - 100% if the CPU is correctly feeding it instructions! If it is at, say, 70%, it is being bottleneck by the CPU! CPU usage will be at 100% during this period!
A 5 - 7% bottleneck refers to the GPU does not go above 93 - 95% usage in demanding games. In this scenario, the CPU will be maxxed out at 100%
Hope this helps!
