I am trying to decide between a D5 pump or an aquastream xt probably an ultra since I may also get the aquaero controller. Any other options or any reasons to choose one over the other would be appreciated.

It makes no sense to buy Ultra version of Aquastream to use with Aquaero, all the extras that Ultra has are really only usable when it is used as a standalone device :

I have both of them but I'd probably get MCP35X or Aquacomputer's new version of D5 (great especially with Aquaero) if I was buying a new pump.

I agree with the MCP35X, fantastic pump. Get the heatsink for it and an 80x15mm fan and you will have a quiet, cool, powerful pump that is cooled by the airflow rather than dumping heat into the loop (the D5 puts around 35W into the water, a small amount but every bit of heat kept out keeps the main components cooler).

The only pump that puts the least amount of heat into the loop is a DDC-1T. Add a performance top, the flow increases while the heat will not increase.
The real question asked here would be, what pump would work in a loop with these components .... cooling this in the PC ....
This way, the selection of pump(s) would be a practical method to a logical flow rate between 1gpm to 1.5gpm.
Remember, too much flow can have adverse effects of cooling the loop just as bad as too little flow. Got to hit the sweet spot for the best results.

Channel 4 of Aquaero can also do PWM control so you can use morherboard cpu fan header or Aquaero to control pumps but since you are going to be using two of them you will need the splitter anyway. I'd use Aquaero unless you already have all channels reserved for something else.

The MCP35X or X2 are good choices. A PWM controlled pump will be able to run at a lower speed compared to pumps that are slowed by decreasing voltage. You can easily setup Speedfan to increase pump speed if you are under loud too.

A +1 for the both the D5 and MCP35X. I've used both and they make for fantastic pumps for any water cooling.
Personally I like the MCP35X over the D5. I can't really identify why, but for the same variable speed-ness and size, I think its overall quieter and better looking once you put it in the case. With some addons like a reservoir you can make the pump blend in really well with the interior of the case, especially if it is black, which is something i prefer. The D5 looks a bit funny because of the mount and casing. (I don't know if that makes sense) But that is my $0.02.

Also, you can make any res a "pump-top res" simply by getting a rotary male-to-male coupler fitting and attaching the pump directly to the reservoir bottom. You can also get extension fittings so that the pump is further from the res if you prefer, but you'll still need the male-male rotary. This is how I am setting my loop up (MCP35X + EK Multioption Res X2 150 Advanced) and I really like it. A few bits of sticky foam padding between the res and res clamp and the mounts and the case will isolate any vibration from the pump and prevent it from vibrating the entire chassis.
