PC running SLOOW!!! - Page 2

Hello Wilhelm,

When was the last time dust was blasted from the heatsinks/fans in the machine? When was the last time the dust filters (if applicable) were removed and cleaned?

Is the machine OCed? If so, what CPU cooler? What Vcore? Do you pay attention to component voltages?

If it does turn out to be a software related issue. I can not stress enough this very simple easy way prevent a lot of the windows "gunkware.." These methods will only be effective after a clean install, existing gunk will circumvent this type of preventative measure so wipe the machine first, then do this.

1. Don't use the DNS server that your ISP forwards to you, instead, use opendns servers. They are free to use. Check them out at opendns.org or simply use 208.67.222.222 , 208.67.220.220, that will stop about 75-90% of unintended gunk without a single computational cycle on your end wasted.

2. Use Firefox, load Addblock Plus add-on. An enormous number of the servers out there that feed gunkware are actually blocked by this plugin.

3. Don' get fooled. The remaining few percent really comes down to your due diligence, because the gunkware you will get at this point, will come from your own personal choices and actions.... Downloading music, movies, and porn from "free" sources will typically always come with a high risk of infection. Clicking on links in emails, being tricked by popups. etc... No software can fix stupid smile.gif

Sometimes I've wondered, would it be easier to train a friend or family member to use Windows in a way in which they aren't constantly infecting themselves? OR, train them to use linux? OR, make them cough up for a Mac, (unfortunately, that 3rd option is no longer the simple answer it once was).

Best of luck and regards,
Eric

Thnx for all the help peoples! After Fraps gave me 15 FPS on ARMA II with all the lowest graphical settings, I've decided to A) Re-install windows and B) Re-install it to an SSD. If it still doesn't speed up I'll build an ivy bridge and HD7000/GTX600 rig, and into the trash for the current sloth

Norton uninstal that crap and get MSE. and scan ur PC with it.
I used Norton years ago and it always killed my PC preformance.

Also try to create new user ,put in windows 7 dvd, open cmd and type - sfc /scannow.

And make sure everything from Norton is uninstalled.

I would agree about removing Norton, but if your bank requires a paid for AV. Just install Norton Anti-Virus and not the whole suite. Or pay for something better, but I assume if you ask them which ones are certified they will just give you the big3 AVs. I hear the suites are just tossed together POS, but if you only have the AV installed it should be fine. I had Symantec Corporate Edition back when my company offers the AV to our home systems for free and it never slows my PC. Switched to just norton AV when the privilege was removed and no slow downs still. Try Python AV, I hear it was still good and it's a paid for AV. I just use MSSE now.

But make sure you check for malwares too, might just be that. MalwareBytes is a top pick for a lot of people, but I still have Spybot S&D (Don't install tea Timer if you don't know how to use it) on the side.

Failing that, check for airflow and temps.

A word on openDNS, I used that a long time ago. it was reliable but it was slower than just using the DNS my ISP gave me. Downloads are down to ~30kbps, when it was above ~150kbps before the switch. This was 10 years ago, so they might have improve now, I don't know. Get a router even if you only have 1 PC(just disable wireless), it should act as a firewall so you can keep the DNS from your ISP.

I use NoScript in conjunction with Adblock Plus, but I won't recommend you use it. False sense of security is more dangerous... (Mainly because it breaks websites and people will just permanently allow everything and be done with it than to be careful and allow only what's needed)

Edit: Just remembered. IANAL but doesn't the US have a blanket insurance against identity theft and/or fraud? You get waived for a certain amount if you report it. IMO shop around and bank elsewhere, requiring a paid for AV is a short sighted policy unless the bank is paying the AV for you.

Yea no need to do reinstall.

I suggest open up resource monitor see if anything hogs CPU.

Find the cause remove it with MSconfig or if you are fammiliar with it go regedit /run/runonce

Also check drivers reinstall inf drivers from intel. If you use RAID mode use the newest RST driver if you use AHCI mode uninstall everything and use MAHCI driver.

Use Resource monitor to see if RST drivers are loaded go to system management use filter all drivers if there is a driver called Intel AHCI under the Non PNP driver section switch it to load on demand.

Reboot see if it´s module is loaded usually the MSACHI driver should do all the work.

Else yes dont use kaspersky or norton they can mess up installs MSSE is more discrete also it uses alot of cpu sometimes.

I had it on my Dad´s PC before he had a Kaspersky trail on the PC and the PC went completly mad when installing Steam games, it even would let win 7 do a 1 hour recovery of system files.

Name resolution has absolutely nothing to do with the transfer speed of a download, the speed and/or latency time to the DNS servers can cause lag time BEFORE the download begins, but does not effect the speed of the download once initiated. You had an unusual "coincidence."

OP, your computer is fast there is no need to upgrade your computer or re-install windows. Follow the steps that we have given you and see what happens, even if you have a $1000 processor if you have malware it's going to go turd slow. Scan your computer for malware in safe mode and tell us what happens.

But if you do decide to trash your computer i'll pay to have your parts shipped to me, just let me know.
