Suggestion for First "Actual" Mouse

Thread Starter
I'm in need of a new mouse. I'm currently using a Logitech Click! Optical Mouse I found laying around (does a decent job). I've never owned a better mouse, so hopefully my first one will be great.

Mouse

1. What's your grip style?

Fingertip.

2. What's your sensitivity?

I don't know.

3. What's your maximum budget?

$80

4. Do you want additional buttons?

They aren't a necessity but would be nice.

5. What games do you play?

Most of the games I play will probably leave the mouse untouched. I play casual games (EDGE, Wave) and sometimes racing (GRID).

6. Do you mind about prediction?

I can tolerate some prediction, as long as it doesn't drive me insane.

7. Other relevant information:
Input anything else you want.
some examples: LOD, ambidextrous shape, weight, wireless, non-braided cord, glossy finish, button activation force, driverless, onboard memory, etc

I don't really have any preferences as this is going to be my first "real" mouse. I guess the only thing I can think of is that hopefully it isn't glossy.

I'm currently looking at the Deathadder Black Edition, Roccat Savu, and Zowie AM (I believe the AM GS is just the Glossy Surface version of the AM).

Mousepad

1. Hard or Cloth?

Either one, preferably the one the mouse I'm going to get will perform best on.

2. Rough or Smooth?

I don't mind either.

3. Which size approximately?

Medium to large (or extra large).

4. What is your maximum budget?

I don't think the mousepad will cost too much, but I'll be able to spend $50.

I can tell you I have the zowie am matte black with the rubbery grip and it's been outstanding. Recently I've owned a G400, G9X and CM Storm Spawn and I much prefer the zowie to all those. Certainly its all a matter of personal preference, but mine has been flawless. Fwiw I play fps almost exclusively and 80% of that is spent playing CS:GO. The two buttons on the side are well placed but the mouse doesn't feel too busy or awkward. Some people say that the buttons offer too much resistance and the same for the scroll wheel. I've never found it to be a problem and I usually literally LOL when people say that. I have medium sized hands, claw grip, fps shooters and this mouse is amazing in my opinion. That about sums it up. If you get one and hate it, I'll even buy it from you. wink.gif I need to get a couple before I get unlucky and the get discontinued because this is easily my favorite mouse of all time.

I love my razer abyssus and you'll have enough money left over to buy a nice bottle of wine or a 6 pack of some good beer. Razer is expensive for what they give you, but it's a tank like Lian Li cases.

+1. I had a razer abyssus as well 2 or 3 mice ago. It was simple but effective. Never got squirrely on me. Good call on that one. Worked well in the same situations I listed above.

Razer and tank being in the same sentence almost ruined my keyboard when the tea shot out my nose.

Another vote for the Zowie AM. Beautifully simple thing.

Downvote Razer. Stay away from Razer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm leaning towards the Zowie AM right now (GS if I feel that I want it). I know that the DeathAdder BE is a solid choice so I will consider it too, but I don't know how well it holds up against the Zowie AM and the other way around. I feel like I've heard about a few problems with LOD or something of the sort with the Avago ADNS-3090 but that was awhile ago when only a few mice with this sensor was out (I believe it was when the CM Storm Spawn was one of the newer mice with this sensor).

It seems the Roccat Savu is rather new so there isn't much feedback after looking around for a bit.

I probably won't get the Abyssus if I find the DeathAdder BE a better choice.

Does the DeathAdder BE require drivers? Just curious. I don't know if the drivers are loaded onto the mouse so I don't have to worry about them like the Zowie AM (and AM-GS). I don't know about the Roccat Savu either.

It turns out the Deathadder BE and Abyssus have the drivers on the mouse too. The Savu doesn't seem to. The extra need for software for the Savu to do things like change the back light color seems rather inconvenient, but if it can deliver, I will still consider it. As of now, I don't believe it will perform any better, if not worse if they didn't try to fix the LOD problem like Zowie did (and I should be able to use some tape with the DeathAdder BE).

Updating the OP with mousepad details because I just noticed that I forgot them. redface.gif

Razer Deathadder and Roccat Savu are a couple of the best mice in terms of cursor fidelity and accuracy. Both these Mice have profile storage.

The Abyssus has no onboard memory, but it has toggle switches on the mouse itself. The drivers allow some interpolation combos in 10% increments from 450/1800/3500. 20 steps possible. (As with DA) This mouse tends to have cursor ripple issues at specific angles, but whether it bothers you is really up to you. It's less prominent on a hardsurface.

The Savu is more of a RAW mouse. The Base DPIs (400-800-1600-4000..) are actually native, unlike the DA.

What Lift off distance "problem?" I can understand preference, but please don't let the opinions of others sway your decision as it's more subjective to each person and how they play. Though if you have an actual issue, by all means.
