Ive heard some RMA'd HX1000's were replaced with HX1050's

3.3 volt rail is allowed to be +/- 5% based on IEEE regulations.

my last reading of 3.048 is well outside of the 5% error. im just wondering now how accurate the asus software is at monitoring that. any idea on how i might go about measuring the 3.3volt rail? do i have to stick a multimeter into one of the wires or can i do it without causing any damage?

All you have to do is stick the lead into the 24pin mobo plug. It might be a tight fit but try not toto push on the metal clip inside. If you get same reading as software your psu is degraded to nuch to keep solid voltage.

Don't trust software to monitor rail voltages.... ever. The best way to check PSU voltages is with a digital multimeter while the system is under load my touching the individual rails.

Some do a decent job tho even tho it may not be as accurate but it definitely helps give you a decent idea of what your working with.
