With well over 125 million active users a month uTorrent is by far the most used BitTorrent client. Because of its success the software is also the main source of revenue for San Francisco based parent company BitTorrent Inc. It is estimated that the company currently generates between $15 and $20 million in annual revenue but this figure is expected to rise after it was quietly announced that uTorrent will become ad-supported.

How much money do they need to keep their lights on?

BitTorrent Inc, the parent company of uTorrent, is backpedaling on its decision to force advertisements on users of the popular file-sharing client. While the upcoming uTorrent release will still include “sponsored torrents”, users will have the option to turn these off if they don’t wish to see them. In a statement the company stresses that they will continue to experiment with new revenue models to support the development and innovation of file-sharing software.

Too late BitTorrent Inc, I have found my replacement.

Yes I will be replacing it as well. I started off using it because it was simple and light weight. I have dealt with the addition of unneeded features like apps. Adds in the the program is to much for me.

It's always about the money isn't it? Just use an older version, no ads.

This is unfortunate. I guess I will have to stick to whichever version is the last one before the ads.

http://www.qbittorrent.org/ or http://deluge-torrent.org/ or http://www.tixati.com/

uTorrent has forgotten what made itself so popular.

Personally I use qBittorrent as it also supports media-streaming thumb.gif

I'm out. I hate ads.

Well... Guess I'll use the last no-ads version until it becomes bothersome for some reason.

I wonder if those people realize that the entire reason uTorrent was so successful was because it was light, simple and ad-free. And now they're about to break one of the things that made it good so they can "keep their lights on". How clever rolleyes.gif

I'll update to the latest version now (before they launch the ad-infested version), and then turn off updates forever. Ta-daa, problem solved.

I hope they enjoy their lights, because they're about to lose a lot of users.
