New build crashes when trying to load OS

I'm relatively new to all this, so I could use a bit of help. Here's what I've got:

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77M_PRO/

http://ark.intel.com/products/61275/

http://www.corsair.com/en/memory-by-product-family/vengeance/vengeance-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz8gx3m2a1866c9r.html

http://www.evga.com/articles/00686/#Dual

and I put it all into this: http://www.powerspec.com/systems/system_specs.phtml?selection=B317

Basically, I took $400 in hardware and put it into a $200 computer. Stupid, I know, but my client didn't want to upgrade to a new computer. Oh well.

So here's my issue, I got everything built and plugged in right (I think) and I can load the BIOS menu and the boot menu, but when I try to load the OS (Windows XP) which is on the old hard drive, it gets to the loading screen, then immediately goes to a blue screen which I can't read because the blue screen only flashes for a second before the system automatically reboots. I'm thinking I might have to just install a new OS, but that would be a pain in the ass and I'd have to transfer all the files and get all the programs back. If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate some help.

Here are a few things you can check...

1. BIOS configurations, especially RAM timings.. I have often had new systems detect the RAM's speed correctly but get the timings horribly wrong resulting in what you are having right now.

2. Is this a clean install of XP? If not, the old drivers on the drive may be causing issues for the new motherboard and/or video card.

3. You are using 8GB of RAM, is this a 64 bit version of XP? If not, try just 4GB and see if that will let you load into windows.

Those are my initial thoughts, let me know what happens. Best of luck thumb.gif

So you put an old hard drive with OS installed into a new system and it fails to boot? This is actually kind of expected and I'm afraid the best solution would be to do a fresh install (btw why XP and not 7?).

Few things you can try before:
- press F8 before OS loads and select disable automatic restart on errors, so you get to see the BSOD
- try changing AHCI to IDE in bios and see if that helps
- run Windows repair and see if it can solve the issue

Again though, you'll be best to make a fresh install of OS after replacing the motherboard.

The people I'm doing this for are total computer illiterates, and have messed this system up pretty bad. And they're afraid of "Learning a new OS." So yeah, I just installed 7 and it's working again. I've got a ton of file transfer ahead of me but oh well. But I did need to change my RAM timing. So thanks DEW.
