HTPC like a BAWS!

HTPC'n Like a BAWS!

Here's what I really ended up getting.

Case- Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced
MOBO- Asus F1A75-I DELUXE
APU- AMD A6 3670K Black Edition
GPU- Sapphire 6670 1GB GDDR5 CF with the APU<---sorry no pics yet
CPU Cooler- Cooler Master GeminII M4 (dead quiet and loving it) Well I was loving it, until I realized it was giving me TERRIBLE temps. replaced with the stock and it's 10C lower...? Go figure.
RAM- Corsair Vengence 1600 2x4 gb (yes it's overkill but I had it sitting around)
HDD/SSD- OCZ Agility 3 60gb as the boot drive / WD Cav Blue 320gb for storage.

POST 10 FOR BENCHES!

PHOTOS INBOUND!!!

CPU Cooler Edit: I ended up getting rid of this. My temps were terrible and i tried reseating it atleast 10times. So back to stock!

P8140360.jpg

A few shots from the build, I ended up ditching the stock 120mm in the front and went with 2 left over 120mm NZXT's I had from another build. I honestly can't believe this case actually supports two120mm fans and a 80mm.

So i'm doing a HTPC build and need some advice. I'm trying to keep the cost down and already have a dedicated gaming PC.

So heres what I need help with.
-ITX vs Mini-ATX. Im leaning towards M-ATX, is there any reason I shouldn't?
-M-ATX case vs. HTPC case. I like the idea of having my PC on my shelf but it seems like it would overheat and my expansion options are pretty limited. I'm thinking of the SilverStone SST-PS07B, any other suggestions?
-CPU choice, this build has to be able to playback HD steaming media from my server and blu-ray playback. I'm thinking of the AMD A6 3500 APU. Is this powerful enough? It will be paired with 4gb of RAM.

Thanks for the help guys.

Ok here's my POV

1. mATX vs ITX
Do u need a machine to be as small as possible or cheaper with more expansion slots? mATX is geared for the latter

2. Most stock/IGP builds in HTPC casings have no issues with heat

3. For an IGP based system you on the right track with an A6-3500 but for best results streaming off server (HD videos) i'd stick to a wired solution rather than wireless for best results wink.gif

Thanks for the reply, I'm starting to lean towards a mATX board in a HTPC case, but I'm still in the air about this. But I am pretty much settled on mATx vs ITX. ITX boards in Japan and hard to find and pretty pricy. So far I've only found two and they are both intel.

As far as the A6, i'm pretty much set on this unless someone tells me a reason why I shouldnt. I can find it around here for about 50$. So should I be looking at replacing the stock heat sink with something like this?

http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?client=tmpg&depth=1&hl=en&langpair=ja%7Cen&rurl=translate.google.com&twu=1&u=http://www1.pcdepot.co.jp/f/dsg-11068-001007009&usg=ALkJrhi6C0Gg6ww4xeSI_54Jndvdo1PqWA

Heres the Build as is stands

Case:SilverStone SST-PS07B, SilverStone Milo SST-ML03B or SilverStone Grandia SST-GD04B
APU: A6 3500 or A6 3670K (only a 20$ differance)
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-A75M-D2H or ASRock A75 Pro4 (They are the exact same price here, can someone help me pick one?)
Storage: Leftover OCZ Agility 3 SSD or 250gb 2.5 Cav Blue....maybe both?
Power Supply: SilverStone SST-ST45SF
CPU Cooler: Scythe BIG SHURIKEN 2

Can some more people chime in?

I personally think the A6 3500 is more then enough for what you are asking, but the A6 3670K is a better chip for multi-tasking or simple gaming even.

There is very little in the boards, but I would go Asrock since I have never built on one yet.

As for storage use the SSD for your OS and main apps, then the other for storage, but you mentioned a server, so just use a SSD.
Nice and fast, as well as quiet, with no moving parts and no noise what so ever.

My other suggestion is find some good fast ram if you plan on using it for any type of gaming since the FM1 chips like faster speeds. Other wise stick with 1333 or 1600 Mhz.

I guess your questions have already been pretty thoroughly answered, but I'll share my opinions too.

1. No reason to not use mATX boards unless you want the smallest possible form factor. mATX offers the four expansion slots for a whole range of possible upgrades into the future (sound/video/WiFi cards) and are generally cheaper at least in my part of the world.

2. Traditional HTPC vs. Mini Tower is a personal preference I think but can be limited by the physical space you have. I have had mid range video cards (68xx series) in the past in HTPC cases and have not really had heat issues but will up the noise produced.

3. The APU should be pretty capable of 1080p playback, I was surprised at what my little A4 3400 can do.

Yeah most people recommend at least 1600MHz maybe even 1866MHz if you can get it at decent price for the APU to get the most out of integrated GPU.

Thanks a lot, I didn't get to buy the stuff yesterday, so i'll be buying today after work. (In about 4hrs) But i'm glad I asked because I had no idea that the ram could make a big differance with the APU's. I'm now considering a higher end APU like the A6 K series or the A8 and matching it with a 6450 I have sitting around and maybe getting some mild gaming in! Also I dont think i'll be going with a HTPC case anymore since there's so many good looking mini towers that are just sexy to me. Again, thanks for everyones help on this. Pictures shall be posted later tonight!

Edit: Everything's bought and Post 1 is updated. Pictures Incoming tonight!
