ips 60hz vs 120hz question - Page 3

Thread Starter
Ok I really hope it was more than just the 60hz causing what I felt. The game was completely different at 60hz compared to my 120hz.

Anyways, I'll be receiving the ips within a week so I'll update my thoughts when I actually have the monitor.

Is there really much difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz?
I just bought two matte 60 Hz IPS Dell U2312HM monitors. Even with matte, I still get a lot of annoying glare from the window behind me without the blinds turned all the way up. I thought the people voted that Matte is the way to go after our love affair with glossy a couple years ago.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who owns both will tell you there is not a big difference. For me, personally, it is night and day.

Where do you get this rubbish from? Skyrim simply uses V-Sync and Triple Buffering. "Checks for tearing in real time" my arse.
The only thing you have to worry about with Skyrim, is keeping the framerate capped at 60fps. Whether by V-Sync at 60Hz or a frame cap of 60fps, it doesn't matter. With a 120Hz monitor I use V-Sync (+Triple Buffer) at 120Hz to eliminate tearing and a 60fps frame rate cap to stop the game's pathetic engine from flipping out.
Potential to do what? Render frames you'll never see. There is ZERO benefit to rendering more than 60fps if you have a 60Hz monitor, or 120fps if you have a 120Hz monitor. Any frame rate above the refresh rate is wasted energy.
Anyway, the bottom line is you don't need to switch to 60Hz for skyrim. You just need to cap the framerate at 60fps.

because that what vsync does. if you vsync on and can't hit 60 you will get knocked down into the 30s.. so turning it off helps your fps...

Can you not read? Skyrim uses Triple Buffering. That doesn't happen with Triple Buffering. That V-Sync 'issue' has been a non-issue for years.
ok... thats why people disable both... triple buffereing is better if you run vysnc. turn it all off and you'll get more but you may see tearing because of the higher frame rate. -_-

The only reason why sane people disable both is because of input lag. Idiots might disable them because they see that their frame rate is limited to their refresh rate and think they're missing out on something.

And tearing isn't "because of the higher frame rate". Tearing can - and does - happen at any frame rate. That's why V-Sync + Triple Buffering is great, and 'Adaptive V-Sync' is rubbish.

higher being higher than 60 on a 60hz monitor = it can tear. thats what I meant with vysnc off

i dont know whether i'd pick an ips over a 120hz monitor because i've never used a 120hz monitor but i can admit that i absolutely hate 1080p resolution but at the same time also hate ips monitors that i have because their sharpness don't come close to the TN panels i have. but for gaming i will always recommend a 120hz monitor over 60hz because it just makes sense. imo resolutions dont matter in fps gaming. i have a 2500x1600 monitor, i have a eyefinity 3600x1920, 1920x1200... and tried gaming in smaller resolutions and i've come to the conclusion that resolution doesn't matter much in gaming. but for computer/browsing use it's absolutely a must that i use at least a 1920z1200 monitor. i dont care for 16:9 monitors but i'd pick a 2560x1440 monitor over a 1920x1200 because of the added resolution. i just dont like the way 16:9 monitors look. when i see 16:9 i just get turned off. its the sole reason i've never been bothered with 120hz monitors. i'm not much of a gamer. neither do i watch movies [full screen] on the computer.
