Which AMD (XFX) card to buy?

Hi buddies!

So I've isolated these card within my price range. I like XFX because of their LIFETIME warranties and outstanding support and performance.
What is the best bang for my buck? Methinks a...7850? I plan on OCing over water. Maybe getting a custom ramsink. Def gonna explore vmods/firmware flashes.

I've been out of the game for a while so I do have some Q's right off the bat:
  1. PCIe 2.1 (6 series) vs 3.0 (7 series)? Any realistic difference in transfer rate? (my board is a Z68, SandyBridge).
  2. Same sort of q as the one above, but, OpenGL 4.1 vs 4.2?
  3. This card is very appealing, granted the rebates and games (which I could sell for additional savings biggrin.gif). But..its a 6950. Old tech right? Why so expensive vs other Series 6 cards? How come its # stream processors blow series 7 cards out of the water?
  4. Anything substantially better about (lower end) Series 7 GPU's vs (top end) Series 6? Smaller diode? Less heat? Better OCers?
  5. If you can make a convincing argument, I'll consider a trade/different retailer/different GPU brand.


And, specifically, what is the difference between these two units? Just the stock HSF? ("double D" version?)

So the cheaper of the two in my last Q apparently only has a 2-year warranty. For shame, XFX!
But the 6950 still has a Lifetime warranty..making it still the most appealing at this point.

If you are watercooling with a GPU only block like Swiftech MWC82-7900 get some decent VRM and RAM heatsinks.

IMO get the gigabyte HD 7950. its a far more capable card. Think about it and make a good decision. thumb.gif
