[VB] Game developers hate Windows 8, Microsoft responds

While Microsoft is hard at work trying to sell the idea of Windows 8 as a great gaming platform, some developers are still not convinced.

Just last month at the Casual Connect conference, Valve cofounder Gabe Newell called the operating system a “catastrophe for everybody in the PC space.” Newell wasn’t referring only to Windows for gaming. He was talking about the operating system as a whole. Much of his worry stems from concerns of Windows losing its openness. “I think there’s a strong temptation to close the platform,” Newell said, though his comments could be clouded by Valve’s announcement today that its digital distribution service Steam will begin selling nongame software in September.

Shortly after Newell called Windows 8 a catastrophe, Blizzard executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo tweeted the quote, adding, “not awesome for Blizzard either.“

Despite the criticism from developers, Microsoft is going to make a strong push for gaming with Windows 8. For starters, it’s already chosen to brand their built-in software, such as Minesweeper and Solitaire, as Xbox Windows, tying these to their popular console gaming platform. Its mobile Windows Phone 8 OS is getting a boost in the gaming department as well.

They need to make a desktop version similar to win 7 and have a tablet version strictly for tablets and call it a day and stop pushing that crappy OS down people throat's

The only thing that would make this OK would be to let me play Forza 4 on my PC. With my Logitech G27. Or something. tongue.gif

I thought Brad Wardell's comment was pretty well said:
Quote:
Windows 8 is trying to be all things to all people, and thus failing to be good at anything in particular.
You may think people are overreacting, but I understand completely how introducing an "app store" type thing could be pointing to a more controlling future for Microsoft desktop operating systems, even if there aren't any drastic changes in that department just yet.

If they made something similar to Windows 7, then it would simply be just Windows lol. If people are having such a fit over it, then just stay with 7 for now. I still believe everyone is blowing this out of proportion.

I am wondering if all the nay sayers don't have motives? The article links to a piece where Brad Wardell of Stardock is interviewed. He says, "Metro's task list won't list desktop apps and the desktop won't list recently active Metro apps." This is incorrect. While the desktop won't list metro apps the start menu, aka Metro, certainly does list desktop apps. He continues to say,' Forcing apps to be full screen is obnoxious. Imagine Notepad running full-screen with no border, no title bar, and no menu bar on a 21 inch monitor. That's what a Metro text editor would be like to use." I would have to ask why he is running an app for notepad? Derp. Finally he says, "Multi-monitor user? Forget it. Metro doesn't support multiple monitors, at least presently. Additional monitors can be the Windows desktop but Metro always reserves one monitor for itself." Mis leading to just plain wrong. I have a metro app running on my second monitor. It is snapped to the left side. The rest of that monitor is my extended desktop. While going to the start menu does require the second monitor to display it fullscreen I can't see the problem. Select your program or app and the start menu disappears. Just like it always did.

Does Gabe give any reasons as to what he feels is wrong with 8? Aside from the fact it may become a competitor.

I don't believe there is any thing in windows 8 that makes it a must have. I do however believe it is a improvement. Will be pretty nice to have the same os on pc, tablet and phone.
