Windows 8, like Windows 7, Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2000, Windows XP, etc, etc, etc ... should have a checkbox for "Classic View". Check that, and you will NEVER (And I do mean NEVER) see Metro again, and life in Windows 8 land will be great for all.
If you hate Metro, like I and MANY others do, you can simply check that (as many of us do for Windows 7), and all arguments vanish. If you like Metro, then you are all set.

But, but, but, it boots faster is as marginally better at other tasks. How could you not put up with one click when you boot your computer for that? :sarcasm:

Well hey, I'm not even bashing people who oppose the new interface. As little as I used the Start menu at all before, I agree and prefer it over the new Start menu. What I don't understand is why these people aren't grasping how easy it is or will be to just add the Start menu right back in and disable Metro altogether? Why wouldn't you upgrade to the newer and faster Windows, especially with it being only $40 to upgrade? Aren't all/most of us on OCN in "the pursuit of performance?" Essentially within DAYS we'll see Aero coming back (W8 hits MSDNAA today) as well as something to entirely disable Metro. I continue calling it Metro because I know MS doesn't like that label tongue.gif.

I think you're hoping against hope.

I mena, if there was a way to remove/disable Metro (that didn't break stuff) and get Aero back? I'd be all over it like an Ethiopian at an all-you-can-eat. But, I'm doubtful.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to upgrade to Windows 8 even if I would get a 20% speed increase. The fact is, I hate Xbox, I hate tablets, and I had being forced to use some bubbly UI that looks stupid. I just don't like it. They could promise me the best speed increase, reliability, and everything under the sun. I'd still not upgrade. They will have to give it away as a mandatory update and somehow sneak it into my system before I go into it. That's how adamant I am against this garbage.

Mark my words, it'll happen, and very quickly. The Start8 Start menu already works on RTM, with even more features than the authentic Start menu from Windows 7 itself...

Features
- Adds a “Start” menu to the Windows 8 taskbar
- Enables quick access and searching of your installed applications
- Adds Run... option via right-click menu
- Adds Shutdown... option via right-click menu
- Choose a custom Start button image

It was unclear from this article as to whether Start8 works with the Win8 RTM build:

Yes it works just fine....

I don't see why anyone would think there is some sort of magical new restriction on Windows 8 that bars people like Stardock from totally customizing the interface. thumb.gif

There WILL be a way to totally disable Metro soon enough. It's already been accomplished in CP just by simply changing a registry value from 1 to 0. It's just going to be a little bit more complicated than that with RTM, but certainly not impossible.

I don't really like the Start8 menu either. More features doesn't always mean better; sometimes I just want some minimalism.

Start8 is still bigger, bulkier, and not as easy to navigate as what I'm used to.

Do you mean the Start button itself is bigger? Doesn't seem any bigger in the screenshot:

Also, about Aero: you can still customize your window borders and taskbar with transparent styling. The only "nice" thing missing from Aero is the 3D flip task switcher, which is also easily "fixed" with this. It says it requires Aero =/ I'll be testing this out later tonight as well.
