That's what annoys me even more about W8, otherwise I'd probably ignore it...MS have done their best and made a really good OS...then they put Metro on it.

I mena, if there was a way to remove/disable Metro (that didn't break stuff) and get Aero back? I'd be all over it like an Ethiopian at an all-you-can-eat. But, I'm doubtful.

I've asked this several times and have yet to get an answer. What the hell does Aero offer that isn't in Windows 8? Jumplists? Win8 has them. Transparency? Win8 has that as well. Window snapping? That's there too. Pin to taskbar? That still exists as well. Window peeking? Yep, still there. Window shaking? Still minimizes everything else. The only thing that comes to mind is the fancy document flipper thing that sorta tried to be Exposé but wasn't quite as useful. And I never used it because while it looked nice, it wasn't any more efficient than the standard Alt+Tab. If that's the only thing changed, then nothing of value was lost.

A small, easy to use and optimise start menu that enables me to continue doing other stuff on the same screen (For example, watching a movie or reading a document) while I use muscle memory to open program A.
GUIs are very subjective things, just because Metro suits you, doesn't mean it suits everyone. MS really should offer the option, but they refuse to for whatever boneheaded reason they have.

Tweaking isn't super duper easy but, it's come a long way. Any window can be made transparent right now--and I mean totally transparent, not just the edges. The taskbar can be reshaped into all sorts of thing. I'm putting my hopes in the guys with the know how to get 'er done for W8.

Why in gods name did you have to use Photobucket? Worst free uploading site, I just want to view the image full-size without all the extra crap that comes with their site, I suggest using imgur but it's really up to you in the end.

Anyway, so they're finally catching up to Linux in that regard? tongue.gif

For comparison; my hobbled together W7 start menu (Not using it with all the shortcuts that I normally would as an unstable OC wiped them all and I can't be bothered fixing it properly, since I'll be getting a new rig and reinstalling fairly soon anyway).

Personally I don't consider having several extra layers of software constantly running just to put big ugly overlays on my desktop clean or efficient, but that's just me.

My desktop has 2 (custom made) icons on it, and that's it. Everything else is either on my auto-hide taskbar, the start menu, or is used infrequently enough that I can just type the destination in via the address bar. Everything is 100% the way I like it because I made it all myself, and i doesn't require anything that isn't already running in windows anyway (assuming you have explorer.exe running).

That's not really the point though, is it? My point is people have reasons for preferring one method of doing things over another. That doesn't make anyone wrong (unless they're simply picking one method out of ignorance of the other, but I'm assuming most of us here on OCN are smarter than that).

Essentially, just imagine I had more games and other applications on it instead of my most used ones, I know where they all are due to muscle memory and can easily read this web-page with the start menu open.

Why not just use Steam to launch games or use the taskbar? Steam lets you favorite games so they get pinned to the top, and you can add shortcuts to non-steam games as well.

Pinning things to the taskbar is the best thing since sliced bread. Only time I hit the Start button is to run a program that is rarely used. Like Notepad, Microsoft Word/Excel, and Calculator.

My Taskbar has Windows Explorer, Steam, Chrome, Media Player Classic, Foobar2000, WinDVDPro11, and Nexus Mod Manager. Everything else can be run via windows key shorcuts.

I can't forsee myself needing any other shortcuts either.

If I right click Steam it shows my Favorited/recent games.

Chrome has the App page, which is linked to my Google account, and shows the most used sites when you open a new window which is also account linked. So when I move to another device my favorites follow me. When I right click chrome: Netflix, Overclock.net, Facebook, etc are right there. It shows recently closed, and most viewed as well.

For Windows Explorer you right click it and your most used folders show up and you can pinn favorites within that menu as well.

When all is said and done really the only big thing i don't like is the full screen start menu, opening to start menu, and the has to connect to everything social media stuff. I don't know why but even though I told it not to connect to facebook it did anyway. So when I start up the computer I am instantly inundated with junk I don't care about. Even after turning it off it doesn't go away. Just makes it less visible. I don't play many games and when I do I buy them from a local store so I as much as I don't like Microsoft trying to force game makers to use their app store it doesn't affect me personally.

I wish they would come out and tell us what the thought process was behind giving one OS to all platforms. It's not just cross platform functionality. Lets face it saves them money it and as people connect more devices it allows for more data to be shared with microsoft.

A question I think is kind of funny to ask is anyone really going to use a touch screen desktop monitor for more than just gimmick use? The average desk is 27"-40" deep and you sit roughly 1'6" on a small desk away from the monitor. That's a lot off arm fatigue and awkward movement. I can see it being popular with kids though. I might even enjoy playing with paint but I can't see it being anymore functional than that on a desktop. Might be good for POS systems though. I have first hand knowledge of how annoying it is to use a touch screen for POS and then having to switch to the mouse for item lookup or whatnot. Of course that isn't really a big enough market to make it a vaunted feature.

POS = point of sale, among other things wink.gif

Not all are on Steam, and this is more efficient. I just click and open, rather than click Steam, find game then open.

I don't like using the task bar as I have it full of programs that are actually running usually, and I prefer to not have the wasted space.

Like I've said countless times, UIs are very subjective things.
