Advice on FT02 Build

Thread Starter
Hi guys!

I recently rebuilt my watercooling system and it's looking pretty good!
But I need your advice!

I am looking for a good coolant/dye that will look awesome, but won't gunk up my waterblocks and equipment.
I'm looking at Mayhem's Dyes, any of you think that's a good choice?

Also, I've got my radiator above my fans, and my fans are sitting at the bottom of my case. This creates a holy crap amount of "suction" noise when the fans ramp up and need more air.
Now, should I reverse the fans and put them above my radiator? Or maybe something else?

Lastly, when I modded my case to fit the radiator, I had to drill out the drive cage. This resulted in the 5.25 mounts at the top to be a bit wobbly and a bit unstable. Anyone have any ideas on how I could stabilize it?

Here are some pictures for you. smile.gif

I apologize for the god-awful flash. redface.gif

If anybody wants to know, here is the part list for my build:
XSPC Raystorm CPU waterblock
MCP35X Pump
XSPC Dual 5.25 Bay Reservoir
Magicool Slim 540mm Radiator
Bitspower 1/2ID 3/4OD Compression Fittings
Duralene 1/2ID 3/4OD Tubing

The bottom of the case is just too restrictive IMO. The best way to eliminate that noise would be to cut out holes so the radiator fans can pull the air more freely.

Not sure if I want to go that route, but if I do, would I just cut off the grille part, or cut most of the bottom out?

For the dye Mayhems is your best bet. You can make just about any color, looks great and wont gunk up stuff. For the fan issue, have you tried a shroud of any kind to create a little extra space between rad/fans? Not sure if it would help or not, just a thought. Good luck

The issue isn't between the rad and fan, it is the clearance between the bottom of the case and the fans, which are sitting right on top of it. Was thinking of putting the radiator on the bottom and the fa s on top of the rad.

How are the fans mounted to the bottom of the cage? Do they have enough clearance? Mine is screwed in from the bottom and evened out with some silicone spacers, and it was a royal pain to do. I am still building mine, not sure why it would make that much noise. The case design is to have the fans sucking air up through the bottom. I have had my ft02 for a couple years, just trying out water cooling now. I have the voltage controlled 180 mm silverstone fans, not the ones with the low/high settings. Which means I keep them relatively quiet with a fan controller. I haven't turned them on since mounting them with the rad, but I could probably test them out on the weekend.

My 5.25 mounts seem fine, but I reattached the HHD cage by rotating it and cutting off 2 sections like you see in some of the ft02 builds that have been posted. Maybe that added back some stability.

Its not so much noise that it would bother me when gaming, but I'm trying to aim for a perfect system. Haha. My fans are just sitting on top of the raised bumps at the bottom of the case without any screws actually attaching it to the case itself. How did you go about cutting the actual hard drive cage? Did you remount it with screws or anything of that sort?

I used a Dremel to cut off two sections of the HDD cage. I did remount it with screws, and a couple black zip ties to be sure. I can't remember now(I did that part 6 weeks ago) but I think some of the fans had some contact with the bottom of the case because the grills are raised, which would make some noise i think if they were on. I used spacers to elevate and make everything nice and even. The fans won't sit properly on the bottom on there own as the 2 bumps mess everything up. I know one guy used the rad brackets that come with the case to mount the fans on the bottom, with the rad on top. He used velcro to attach the brackets to the bottom. That is a lot easier then what I did, I would probably do that if I was going to do it again. You could probably just put the rad on the bottom and the fans on the top if you are just placing it in there unsecured, and you wouldn't have to worry about that.

I have mine screwed on with some 35mm screws. I was just wondering if it was OK to have the radiator as the spacer to help with airflow. I'll have to try working on the HDD cage sometime, I'm just not that handy with my Dremel. (Proxxon) Did you drill holes in so you could mount the HDD?

I drilled one new one, and I think I reused one that was there. I should have drilled one more but it was going to be a pain finding a screw of the right length so I used a tie instead. It was about a month ago. I kind of forget all the things I did. I took the case a part in May. Build is on hold waiting on various parts. I used 40mm screws to get the whole thing together threw the bottom, spacers, fans, into the rad. I also cut off some of the tabs on the cage too to make it fit better after rotating.
