psu comparison

Here is the quick rundown. I had my PC since 2009. I basically cheaped out at that time and went with a XION 1000watt PSU. I had luck with it, and it worked untill 7/2011. It blew because a transformer right outside our apartment blew randomly and alot of people lost electronics. When that went I bought a Rosewill 1000watt. Here are my Specs

Asus P6t deluxe MB
Intel i7 920 OC to 3.8
6GB DDR3 (soon to be 12GB)
GTX280
1 SSD + 2 7200k HDDs
Bluray and DVD rom
Antec 1200 with the two extra fans
TRUE cooler in push pull

now here is my issue. Im going to be getting a Sapphire 7950 in a few weeks. I realized that my XION is not the best PSU and I decided to get a better brand before i ordered the GPU. I figured i had for three years and the warranty is out so its not a loss to replace it.

See the issue is I forgot that it blew up last summer and I already replaced it with the Rosewill. I already ordered a 750watt Corsair and it will be here tomorrow. But im wondering if my Rosewill is better and i should return the Corsair. I know im going from a 1000watt to a 750 but i know watts are not everything. I will OC the 7950 and I would possibly want crossfire by christmas. What should I do?

Here is my XION that is long gone.

The Rosewill and Corsair are on a par at the levels you'll be using them at. Your system pulls about 300-350W maximum.

I would definitely stick with the Corsair. I love Corsair and their products, they also have good RMA support. I just ordered an AX650 and I can't wait to use it for my build. It looks really nice and has a 7 year warranty. I would sell the Rosewill on Craigslist and you could probably get a nice sum of cash from it.

By those numbers are you counting the 280 or the 7950. And will I be OK with crossfire.

Honestly, I need the money now, so If i can get away with returning the corsair I would do that. But if its a better PSU than the Rosewill, and can handle Crossfire 7950's with the rest of the rig stated above then i would keep that and try to move the Rosewill.

The 280 and 7950 have comparable power draw. And you won't notice the difference between the Corsair and the Rosewill in this case, even with Crossfire.

Really, you won't see any power difference between a really good power supply by Corsair or a crappy power supply by Diablotek until something goes horrible wrong. I stopped trusting non-vouched brands after a PSU failed on me and I had to replace my GPU afterwards. If I recall correctly, it may have been a DEER.

In this case though the Rosewill is almost as good as the Corsair. The Corsair might have a slight edge, but it's not something I'd pay $100+ for.

Yes, I completely agree. smile.gif Really in most cases, no one needs anything more than a decent $80 power supply. People just have a lot of cash they want to spend. I bought the AX650 because of the full-modular aspect of it. Can't stand non-modular PSUs now. It broke my side panel because of the lumps!

Well if he were buying it new I'd recommend the Corsair. But since he already has the Rosewill there's not a lot of point in spending that much on a marginal upgrade.

If he could sell the Rosewill for $100, I wouldn't mind the marginal upgrade for $20 after the coupon!
