General SSD questions from a newbie

Thread Starter
Upgrading my rig(s), and it's time to look at hard drive performance. I'm tired of seeing WEI 5.9! But the details keep confusing me...

1. Should I get a SATA II SSD to save money because my 2009 mobo only has SATA 3GB/s speed? For example, would it be wise to get a Crucial V4 instead of an M4? Would the M4 somehow perform better than the V4 in spite of the SATA II bottleneck? I won't have SATA III capable PCs until far in the future (maybe SATA IV by then).

2. Is AHCI completely necessary for an improved user experience? Can an nForce4 mobo without AHCI benefit from an SSD at SATA I / 1.5GB/s speeds? Would putting two SSDs in RAID mode on this board give any benefits of AHCI? And again, would it be prudent to only buy SATA II models?

3. How do I find out if SSD firmware has built in TRIM / garbage collection? What are the most reliable firmware developers?

4. What the heck is "alignment" in regards to SSDs?

5. Did any reputable company make PATA/IDE SSDs? I think it would be funny to turbocharge my old 2001 Compaq.

Thanks in advance.

Get the M4 over the V4. It will perform better.

not sure with nForce. Someone else may know. A SSD is a big difference in performance still tho.

All current drives have TRIM support as long as the OS and SATA driver support it. ALL SSDs have garbage collection.

4. What the heck is "alignment" in regards to SSDs?
Just that teh partition aligns with teh NAND on the drive. Windows vista and newer will properly align your drive by default upon install.

This is really bad frown.gif. For sequential you will be limited for ~185MB/s at best.

The only benefit from SSD will be its low access time and faster 4K speeds (main benefits of SSD for boot drives any way). Witch such an old motherboard I personally would not bother getting SSD until at least motherboard upgrade.

Most SATA 3 SSDs currently cheaper than any SATA 2 SSD IIRC, so there is no point getting old tech.

Actually it looks like I was wrong. The old nForce4 board supports SATA 3Gb/s, not 1.5. I always thought it was the first SATA version because it was my first encounter with the interface, my friend was hyping it up at the time (2004). Not so bad after all ^_^
