Question for you rotary tool users

Thread Starter
I've juse purchased a black & decker rotary tool off of amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-RTX-6-3-Speed-Accessories/dp/B0001GUDRI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1344843064&sr=8-3&keywords=rotary+tool) and I was wondering if I could use Dremel brand attachments with it.

Also, I would like to start cutting some 120mm holes in my case and I was wondering about what attachment I should get.

The circle cutter: http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-678-01-Circle-Cutter-Straight/dp/B000HI5WTY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344843146&sr=8-1&keywords=dremel+circle
or
The multi purpose cutter: http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-Multi-Purpose-Cutting-565D/dp/B0000302YS/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1344843111&sr=8-13&keywords=dremel+attachments

I'll still be able to cut circles with the multi-purpose cutter with a steady hand, correct? I feel if that's the case, it'll be a much better buy for future uses if I ever need to cut something else.

And lastly, what exactly does this do? lol http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-4486-MultiPro-Keyless-Chuck/dp/B0000302ZV/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1344843111&sr=8-7&keywords=dremel+attachments

it is much harder to cut circle it is highly suggested to get a whole saw or for curves a saber saw.

the chuck allows you to use any sized bit. the three prongs open or close to accommodate bigger or smaller bits.

like cdouble said, its alot easier using a hole saw, 4.5 inch is the size you'd need for a 120mm hole.

http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-D180072-2-Inch-Hole-Saw/dp/B00005LEZU/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1344843912&sr=1-3&keywords=4.5+inch+hole+saw

and you'll need to get an arbor too. this is what you use to attach the hole saw to the drill, and it provides a center drill for alignment.

see this video. skip to ~6 min

i strongly recommend the hole saw, especially if you're going to be cutting more than one hole. if not then the circle cutter is what you need.

edit: heres the link for the arbor

I've cut fan holes with holesaws (super easy, but can be expensive to buy the saws themselves) and the dremel with standard cut off wheels. Both work, both need a lil clean up work, so in the end it's ultimately up to you and your comfort level and maybe even how many holes you plan to cut with your current project, and future projects. Don't know about everyone else, but I don't mind investing in tools for a current and possible future projects. thumb.gif

Yeah, I know about those hole saws, but they are really pricey. They almost cost as much as the rotary tool I purchased. lol. And I'm only going to be cutting about 2 holes.

yeah but, work that looks crap vs work that looks professional.

Couldn't agree with you more. I actually need to cut 2 120mm holes and one 140mm, and I don't think I can afford 2 hole saws with school starting soon and what not.
buy the 140mm, you can use it for both, just need to mark the hole properly, down side it a gap around the edges on the 120mms or you can get 120/140mm fans that are 140mm with 120mm mounting holes.

Interesting thread! I already bookmarked some of the products to my amazon wishlist. So 3.5 would be the correct size for 92mm blowholes or are there 3.7inch hole saws?
