best 120mm fan for blowing upwards

Thread Starter
after extensive study of existing bearing types for computer fans, i have concluded that NONE of them are designed to blow air UPWARDS. they are either designed to blow air horizontally, or blowing air downwards. so I guess it's up to the experience of my fellow OCN'ers to provide a best recommendation for the intended purpose. I've read that noctua fans do well blowing upwards, and some recommended noiseblockers. (tho no bearing information can be found as to how it works. just an obscure name for the bearing and nothing more)

so... hopefully someone can help me out in finding the quietest upward blowing fan on the market today. heck for all i know it could be a sunon or a delta biggrin.gif

the noctuas are nice, but you can try the new corsairs or even the gentle typhoons, all very silent+powerful.

The solution for this could be doing a push/pull setup on your top fan, I personally used some GT AP-14's on a top mounted rad blowing air out of my case. Worked without problems and they are quiet as well.

the problem i'm running into is that when the fan is oriented to blow upwards, ALL benefits of a bearing is rendered useless due to gravity pulling down on the fan blade assembly and the only thing holding the thing up is the C clip grabbing onto the shaft which makes quite abit of noise when rotated. I suppose i can just lubricate the C clip on a regular basis and keep it from making noise, but that seems like a ghetto way of solving the problem. I'm hoping there are other bearing types that are much more friendly towards the upward blowing orientation so that the C clip doesn't become the bearing itself

I don't see the problem. Fan by definition pull/push air. In doing so the fan blades are pulled/pushed in one direction on their shaft and the clip. If a fan is pushing air up it is pushing itself down. . Gravity is only a second force.

Example: PSU fans live their entire life pushing air up. thumb.gif

actually, a typical ball bearing fan design blowing downward has the fan assembly resting on the ball bearing when rotating. that is not true when the fan is blowing upwards. I suppose what i'm looking for is a fan blade assembly that is oriented to blow up instead of down while still taking advantage of the bearing. so if anyone know of a fan that has it's fan blade in the reverse orientation, or a fan that is designed to rotate in the reverse direction that would help alot.

Why do you not just reverse the circuit?

the direction and the way the fan blades are bent would be highly inefficient if you simply reverse the circuit. it would also likely cause alot more noise to be produced.

interesting question, what about the magnetic bearing fans? i think they dont actually make contact as they spin

a double ball bearing or a FLuid Bearing works just fine blowing upwards.
