Mounting components directly on wall (no case)

Thread Starter
So I'm about to start my second year of college and I've been thinking about the most space efficient way to have my desktop in a dorm. I've decided that I want to forgo the bulky case altogether and just mount the motherboard directly on the wall above my desk. This also sounds ideal to me because transporting my case from home (LA) to school (Chicago) is out of the question.

This is obviously very unconventional so I'm wondering if you guys can foresee any issues I might run into, as well as possible solutions for them. For example, would the weight of my graphics card be problematic since I won't be using a motherboard tray? Would rotating the board 90 degrees relive some of the stress from the PCI slot?

Also, what would be the best way to mount my PSU, hard drive, and disk drive?

Thanks for your input. As always, it's very much appreciated. I'll be sure to post pictures as soon as I move in and get this all set up.

Dust.
People will also probably touch it or something unless you mount some glass or plastic of some sort in front of it.
If they allow that then I guess it's okay, I could honestly see them objecting to you drilling holes in the wall though.
I'd prefer to spend a little more money to get a small case or something because accidents happen and a rig stuck to a wall in a college dorm is asking for one.

As for the graphics card, if you're drilling holes in the wall to mount your board then drill another one to secure the card with a long screw or something. I think you should be able to fit one on the side you're not connecting a display to.

Its gonna look messy with the PSU and HDD/SSD hanging but its sounds kinda kool. If you do it post some pics.

If you are going for a new build consider a mITX build as an alternative. They are very powerful these days.

Somehow, I just don't see something like this surviving on a college dorm room wall.

I had considered that. I might try to get some plastic to put over it and add a few fans if I have time.

They won't care as long as I fill up the holes at the end of the year. I like that idea for the graphics card though. I'll probably try that. thumb.gif

Be careful about putting holes in your wall. Even though you can fill them they still might fine you. Also I doubt if your RA say this they would be pleased. Honestly this is asking for trouble in a Dorm environment. And have you thought about theft? Just get a case when you get to college and save yourself the hassle.

Thanks for your concern but last year my roommate and I bought throwing knives and used our wall as a target. We just filled up the holes before we moved out and it wasn't an issue. As far as theft goes, I think having the components secured to the wall rather than the inside of a case that can be easily lifted would make it more theft proof. They've also started putting this new thing on all of the doors called a lock. tongue.gif
