Bubble Fish - The Mineral Oil Cooled PC - Page 2

Ooh bud, quick bit of advice if it hasn't happened yet - take all your heatsinks off the vid card, north bridge / south bridge / etc, and clean off the TIM. The TIM dissolves into the oil. Use a drop of the oil in place of the grease and put them all back on. That way there shouldn't be any air pockets on the contact surfaces (cause they are oiled) and the oil is a great heat transferer when compared to the air. (not as good as proper thermal grease but who cares, it's going to be submerged anyhow.) Then you don't get crappy looking oil.

oohhh more people! btw mobkey man, I already finished the build, but so far the oil seems to be fine I guess. Temps aren't looking to good tho, prolly going to use some water cooling components lyk a pump and a radiator to get the oil moving. posting finished product soon!

Update 2 ~Mineral Oil

I finished the Mineral Oil PC mostly, however I'm still planning on adding some stuff to it. I finished pouring the Mineral Oil a month ago actually, but I never had the time to get it posted up here. I even shot a time lapse of aquarium being filled which I will upload some time soon...
Also another issue I seem to be having are actually the temps of the PC. The major issue is that I'm idling at around 50c for both CPU and GPU. I really need to get a water cooling setup. Any help on this would be nice:thumb:
Anyhow, here are some HD pics to enjoy:D

Hey man nice work! I did this about 2 years ago and LOVED the entire project. I did it on old hardware as well.

A few words of advice.

1. The thermal paste will dissolve in the mineral oil, remove it...or use indigoxtreme before putting it in the oil.

2. The fans will move slow, but they will work! Leave them in there to help circulate!

3. If you want to decrease the amount of heat take the PSU out of the case, no need to have that in there (other than for looks). you can mount that on the backside rather than have it pump heat into the oil.

4. When temps outside get low, put it outside and push for a high overclock with naturally low temperatures!

Take a look at my thread for some ideas! http://www.overclock.net/t/869290/oil-submersion#post11362535

Hey carlos, thanks for the advice, too bad I already put in the PSU in it already... herp derp. I'm not really willing to take it out tho because its full of oil and stuff... Also I forgot to remove the the thermal grease (gah) mid way pouring the oil I remembered, but I decided it would be too big of a fuss. As for the fans, I actually added an extra fan near the stripped off PSU to circulate the oil. Thx for the advice tho, and your mineral PC looks pretty nice too! As for temps, I'm prolly just going to add a watercooling setup, using the aquarium as the reservoir and pumping it through a radiator. Would it work if I had the pump inside the aquarium and then pumping out the mineral oil into a radiator? Would it require a strong pump push the oil through? I'm a complete noob at water cooling.....

funny isn't it? I have money to spend on oil, a gpu an aquarium and a power supply, but I ran out of money to buy a cheap fish and rocks for the bottom. tongue.gif

How are you cooling the oil? Your temperatures are going to rise continuously if you don't suck the heat out of the oil somehow. I hit 70°C in 3 hours on mine before the acrylic tank failed. I had an external rad set up next to a small window fan, but a faulty pump meant I wasn't moving oil through the rad. New pump plus a second pump and new fans on the rad and problem solved (temporarily).

Another thing I would do is have a break in the cables coming out of the case. Put female-female adapters going through the PCI slots or something, and make them flush with the metal on the tank side. This will prevent the oil from wicking up the cables and out of the case and onto everything else you don't want it on.

Im surprised no one mentioned this site but these guys built a very nice oil cooled PC. so if you have any problems I would just read up on their builds to get some ideas.
