AMD 7800/7900 series World of Warcraft Performance?

I know Tom's Hardware had a pretty basic benchmark between Nvidia/AMD higher end cards, but I'm wondering if anyone here who plays the game still can give me their assessment/rough numbers FPS wise(in a big city/raid) on how the game performs on AMD hardware with the latest beta drivers. Tom's numbers were from launch and apparently there were drivers issues and game crashes during their testing. Basically, a GTX 570/580 were pulling ahead of the newer Radeon HD cards by a significant margin.

I tried a Gigabyte 7870 earlier this year at one point using 12.6 Catalyst drivers, and noticed significantly lower framerates on ultra settings with multisampling @ 8x. By significantly lower, I mean worse than a mild factory OC'ed GTX 460. Everything was fine until things got more crowded with more effects...and this is with my same 4.4GHz Core i5.

I am still up in the air about what card I will finally stick in my system for the foreseeable future, but my budget is around or under $300 USD and I will be playing @ 1920x1080 on a 60Hz monitor. Also, yes, I know WoW is a very CPU dependent game but with the addition of DX11 support(which is noticeably better looks wise) and ambient occlusion in MoP it is more taxing on the GPU than it was before.

My MSI 7950, at stock settings, ran the game at 2560x1440 with ultra settings at 60fps. Tested in the middle of Stormwind with a multitude of people around, as well as a quick LFR DS run. 12.7 beta drivers installed.

Wait for GTX 660 ti and 660 release around Aug 16th to make a choice. 660 TI is said to be around 300$ and wipe the floor with 7800 series.

I haven't played WoW since January or patch 4.3 (I basically quit after downing deathwing). But in my experience you could run wow at max with a 6770 at 1080p. If Mists will be upping the ante slightly a 7770 is probably your best bet.

Keep in mind that wow really isn't all that cpu hungry either. Once you get hardware powerful enough (quad core w/ a 5770 and beyond), the real issue is network latency. The reason why cities and big raids cause frame rate slow down is because the computer has to wait for packets before it can render scenes. ALL MMOs suffer this problem, and there really is no solution.

You know I hear that a lot and having had a 5770 a while back I can tell you with multisampling and settings cranked even simple things like buffing blessing of might or having spell effects go off in a 5-man dungeon would drop my FPS pretty bad @ 1080p with a Phenom X4 965.

Even a 6870 gave me FPS drops when I'd walk through fire or smoke effects in battlegrounds or dungeons...something I didn't get(or nowhere near as bad FPS spike wise) with a 460/560.

Dont mind the card much you buy, its CPU clock speed you need.
The faster your CPU core's the better.

A 560ti, 6870, 6950, gtx570, 7850, gtx660 will all run the game the same, its CPU clock speed that make's the difference.

Btw, an SSD really speeds up WoW to.

I ran wow at 1920x1200 on an amd 5750 (slight overclock) for a year at 75fps most of the time with everything at ultra except shadows. I think I had those at medium lowest settings. I guess its possible that AMD is slower than intel in WoW but this was run on a q9550 @ 3.8ghz with DDR2 ram. I never saw any slowdowns due to fires or buffs. I did see plenty of slow downs in 25 man raids (down to as low as 25fps) but when this happened i'd watch my gpu usage sink to 60% or whatnot while waiting for network updates to render scenes. My conclusion was that if I had a 5770 (about 25% faster) I could run shadows at high and everything would pretty much be maxed out. I could be wrong but I have over a year of cataclysm experience to mostly back that up.

I agree 99%. When I got an SSD I played wow a lot more (probably a bad thing) simply because teleporting to dalaran was just so easy. Load times between teleports are something like 4 seconds or less. Really amazing stuff.

Im running it on an HD 7950 oc'd to 1100/1400mhz and get about 47-94 fps in Stormwind. In dungeons, battlegrounds, arenas, and raids I get an avg of 90-120 fps. This game is more CPU intensive than GPU; however, like most MMO's it can put some stress on your framerates depending on where your at. Latency and internet connection can play a big role also. My latency is usually 78/78 home/world.
