Pumps or loop...whats my problem? - SOLVED

Ok...so I decided to rebuild my desk and had the bright idea that I would take all my components out of the case and mount them on a back board and attach it to the top of the desk freeing up a good bit of room in a cramped case I was using and allowing for better air flow to the rads.

Since I was going to have to tear everything a part I figured I would add a few new items to the pc. I added a second pump figuring it would be a bigger looped system and would need the extra umf, I added a memory block...just because, and I swapped out my dual bay reservoir for the FrozenQ helix reservoir, and a new video card with water block.

After re-routing the plumbing 4-5 different ways I dont know what is wrong...my video card spits out errors after about 15-20min of use...after researching the it on the net the error seems to be the video card is overheating. I downloaded a temp app and it seems to be acting up around 40-42C. Then my PC just started to lockup and reboot itself. I figured this was a heating issue as well, but dont have temps for that.

This is on a fresh install of Window 7 do I dont think its a software issue causing the lockups and issues. Looking at the few bubbles I have in the system the water doesnt seem to be flowing very fast. I dont have any kinks in the tubing and I thought with dual pumps that would be plenty of strength to move all the water in the system.

Here is the setup:

I have tried SEVERAL different loop paths

1) New Res > Pump > Rad1 > Rad2 > Splitter A/B > A: (CPU > Mosfit 1 > Mosfit 2 >) B: (Bridge > Memory > Video Card) > Splitter > New Res

2) New Res > Pump > Splitter A/B > A: (CPU > Mosfit 1 > Mosfit 2 >) B: (Bridge > Memory > Video Card) > Splitter > Rad1 > Rad2 > New Res

3) New Res > Pump > Rad 2 > Rad 1 > Memory > Mosfit 2 > Mosfit 1 > CPU > Bridge > Video Card > New Res

4) Tried it with both new and old Res, but I wont list those diagrams....

5) Current setup: New Res > Pump > Video Card > Bridge > Memory > Mosfit 2 > Mosfit 1 > CPU > Rad 2 > Rad 1 > New Res

6) I even tried running it with both reservoirs and that didnt work, but I wont diagram those.

So you can see I have tried having the system flow from top to bottom, and tried having the pumps push from bottom to top in all different directions and the water just doesnt seem to move that well.

Yes both pumps are work...I was up at 3am this morning checking that.

Are 2x pumps not enough for this? Is this just too much stuff to try and cool? Plumbing too long (I tired to make it as short as possible)

I am thinking about moving everything back into the case, but im not even really sure that will fix the issue and that would completely throw away all my work I did on this backboard case. The only other thing I can think of trying it having the 2 pumps run seperatly instead of together, but wat a waste of money I would have spent on the dual pump block if I do that.

Anyway...any thoughts for ideas are appreciated.

It sounds like you did't install the GPU block correctly. If there is a single part of the GPU that is not seated properly, the one part could overheat and cause the whole card to crash. I would buy some new thermal pads and get to work trying to reseat your card.

I think two pumps should be enough, although you don't tell us which ones...but it sounds like you have enough flow if temps are truly 40-42 C; and that seems low to cause a heat related video card failure. That said, even a low flow like 2 lpm should be noticeable. I flow meter might be worth the effort here...or just timing a gallon of water through the system with a couple of buckets....

I am using 2 Swiftech MCP655-B pumps connected together with a Bitspower Dual D5 Mod

That pump pair in series ought to be adequate. I would suspect another problem rather than blaming the cooling, especially if you're sure the GPU is running that cool.

Sounds like a problem with your GPU block or GPU overclock.

Just to double check, what are the CPU temperatures under load? If they are reasonable then your loop is working.

For the GPU, check the VRM temperatures using GPUZ or HWiNFO64. It could be that the VRMs are not making good contact with the water block.

If it is OC'ed try resetting to stock and see if the problem persists - if so it is most likely a temp issue, if not then it could be an OC issue.

40-42°C is nothing for GPUs, a lot of them idle arround that temperature on the stock cooler. It is not the GPU core heat that is causing problems.

I have installed the old video card...to see if pc is more stable and hopefulll either determine or eliminate the issue being the ne video card ...(I hope its not and issue with the card).

I will try and bench mark some temps...so far no issues, but I havnt started Diablo yet.. :-)

Thanks for the advise...I will reseat the waterblock on the new card tomorrow and post and update.

Thanks for all the advise.

I rerouted the pipes again and seems to be running a little better now.

Cross your fingers...
Thanks again.

Well im a little embarassed to say I think I found the issue. I am posting it just to maybe help someone in the future remember reading this post and not make the same mistake.

So I took the waterblock off my video card and what did I see... I used thermal goop on the main gpu, but I used the thermal pads on the out lying chips...and I didnt pull the protrective plastic piece off the thermal pad before I put the waterblock on...I just pulled the plastic off the other side that stuck to the card side. Deeeerrrrrr biggrin.gif

I went ahead and put the stock fan cooler back on...ran the card for anight and everything ran fine.

I re-applied some thermal goop...took the plastic off BOTH side of the thermal pads...reinstalled the waterblock and ran Diablo3 for a good 2-3 hours with no isses.

Thanks for everyone that replied here...your assistance deffinatly helped.

We all make stupid mistakes at times, like leaving the protective film on a CPU block, or thinking all the pins have fallen off your 1156 chip...

Glad you found the problem.
