How quiet is liquid cooling?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

Decided to post this since I was a little curious about LC.
Im not familiar with it but just wanted to know how quiet it is compared to air cooling, with a decent setup how long can you leave your computer on for?
Thanxs biggrin.gif

When having a flawless pump, meaning no rattling and so on and having decent fans, then the sound levels to a bee hive half a mile from the house. biggrin.gif
The main reason we watercool is to significantly reduce noise thumb.gif

When all tubes and fittings are well connected, passed leak test then I'd say you can leave it running until some of your hardware dies.
I left it run for a week and nothing tragic happend.

the noise level is dependent on many factors, e.g. number of fans, fan rpm, what fans you're using, what pump you're using.(some pumps are louder than others)

Depends on how much gear you're cooling, what the processing load is, how much radiator area you have, and lastly what kind of fans you have running and if they're undervolted. At idle I can run close to silent with undervolted fans.

WC rigs can be left on indefinitely so long as the pump is working. I keep a watercooled folding@home boxen upstairs that has been at 100% CPU load for the last 3 months straight.

Very quiet. I get about 52 dBA with the sound level meter just about an inch to my PC. About 30 dBA 10 feet away. The room during testing is not completely silent (there's a bet of outside ambient sound). The (6) Enermax fans set & running at full 1,400 rpm. Gaming & not gaming I set the fan speed at the max. This is about as loud as it can get. You can't do this with air cooling & cooling EVGA GTX 680 SC. I used to have (2) Sapphire Radeon HD 4870X2 before (can't run on quad Xfire without overheating), when it was air cooled my wife's complaining of the noise especially at night even when not gaming (my main PC's in my bedroom). Now the noise almost gone. Way better temp too.

The ambient sound by the way is about 25 dBA. PC running almost 24/7 & on sleep mode at around past every midnight.

My main reasons in water cooling is 1st the reduced temp & 2nd is reduced noise.

It depends on what you want from your loop; quiet, high-performance, or low-cost. You can only have 2 of the 3.

For me, I am water cooling for performance/lower temps. The way I figure is that I will have a very cool-running machine with no more noise than an air-cooled rig, likely less, but temps under load will be as little as half what they are on air even with significant overclocking (GPU in particular, CPU temps don't drop as much as GPU).

There are other reasons, such as the fun of having something to constantly tweak and fiddle with (if you like cars, you know what I mean), the aesthetics (H2O just looks better than O2), increased component life, and the removal of a significant amount of weight from the motherboard.

With a setup using something like the Black Ice SR1, XSPC RX, or Alphacool NeXXos UT60 rads you can run fans at speeds below 1000rpm and have an extremely quiet machine. If you want more, you can go with the Alphacool NeXXos, XSPC EX, Black Ice GTX or Stealth, or the Koolance Copper 30fpi rads and some 3000rpm+ 25-38mm thick fans and have immense cooling power but it will be loud. There is a middle ground of course, with 12-20fpi rads often well-suited to 1500rpm fans or so.
The beauty of it is that you can set up the loop exactly how you want, and you will have something tailored specifically for your needs.

Liquid cooled can be as quiet as slowest fans speed, ie like ~700 rpm fan speed on mine. Using a rheostat, you can have both performance and quiet. When I stress test, my fans are 1800 rpms push/pull and delta air to water is under 3C. For 24/7 use, gaming, etc fans are 700-800 rpms and barely audible movement of air. My dual pumps D5's on setting 4, with koolance tops, and completely decoupled from case with petra gel and industrial strength velco are inaudible with 700 rpm fans running.

Bottom line water cooling gives you much better temps than air, and with rheostat you can have near dead silence for 24/7 use and higher performance when stress testing.

Put it this way; more than once I have hit the power button on my "work" rig and ended up turning it off - it is so quiet I actually can't hear it running over the background noise during the day.

At night I can just about hear it running, so long as the fridge is off and the dog stays still.

My "main" rig is a little noisier, I can hear it running during the day but it is nothing annoying. Again it is quieter than the fridge so long as it is at idle.

You can have your setup as quiet as you like, or as noisy as you can stand if you want a little extra cooling.
