This was 3 groups, Fujitsu Laboratories, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, and Kyushu University in Japan, working together for 128 days using 14 high end computers to break a 923 bit paring-based encryption which has a flaw in the way it encrypts.

Had this been a 923 bit public key encryption, these guys would be working for the next million years trying to break it.
Basically it wasn't standard public key encryption.

However, if you went on a site that had, say, child porn, and the FBI were tracking users you can assure yourself they will catch you.
However, for the normal webmaster, probably yes it'd make you "invisible" to them.
This is not good as a stand alone program. You need to deploy it on top of other security features and take great care not to expose yourself..
Actually they wouldn't bother if that was what one was doing. They go after the big fish (the people making it... even if that is just a stupid 15yo). Viewing it isn't illegal and that was held up in NY.

They were caught through other methods, Doxing and the like. No-one has been caught due exclusively to the TOR network... yet. Regardless of what the media says (obviously the government doesn't want you to use something that they find extremely hard to trace through; so they just say that in the media and then mention the REAL way in the courts... which are then placed in sealed files).

LOL I remember this; if it's USA owned, Chinese owned or is sold in Saudi Arabia or India... it's definitely probably got a backdoor (NSAKEY anyone - from Windows 2K?)

Stick to open-source and highly popular ones at that... and you should be fine.

EDIT: So basically if the security suite is being SOLD - don't use it. Use free ones only... and make sure they're open-sourced.

But in relation to the topic; best solution is VPN (to protect DNS, also remember to switch your DNS servers as well IF you're unlucky enough to have a DNS leak) with TOR all being done via a wifi spot.

Then encrypt your HDD using Truecrypt or something similiar and ensure that it allows the use of layered encryption (probably not the right term, but I mean that it lets you use multiple encryption algorithms on top of one another) and has the rubberhose filesystem (made by Mr.Assange himself!)

That ruling made it so that if you accidentally stumbled on CP, you wouldn't get busted for it. They'll still strip your computer away from you and look for evidence showing that you're a continuous viewer, rather than, "Oops, clicked on a dirty link."

If you're a continuous viewer, you're still going to prison for the consumption of child pornography.
