After so much argument in this thread about headphone quality, I thought I'd bring up a few points.

1.) It's for gaming, so it doesn't need to be of the same quality as some good music headphones.

and

2.) It's not of the same quality as good music headphones. As long as the gamers buying these headphones understand that, no problem. Hopefully they don't get the impression that just because they Sennheisers that they're the same quality of some of their other non-gaming headphones.

For example, just looking a few key specs:

PC 310 & 323, $59-$159, Freq. response: 15Hz - 23kHz, THD (total harmonic distortion, lower is better): Unlisted (that's not a good thing)
HD 280 pro, $99, Freq. response: 8Hz - 25khz, THD: 0.1%
HD 800, $1499, Freq. response: 6Hz - 51khz (high-end is laughable, human ear cannot hear above high 20's), THD: <= 0.02%.

A wider range of frequency response means that the headphones can output frequencies in that range, if it cannot output a frequency then you will not hear that audio, period. However, most of the sound you're hearing in a game is well within the ranges of the PC 310 headphones. The higher priced headphones are often more comfortable as well as they're over-the-ear instead of on-the-ear, so they do not put pressure on the ears. There are other specs worth researching before you buy nice headphones as well, like how well audio is reproduced across the full range of the headphones.

Anyway, it's really up to preference, some people would be fine using the PC 310 for not only gaming, but also music, while audiophiles might not be caught dead using them. No reason the two groups can't get along, different strokes for different folks.

Unrelated to above info:
I'm curious how the human ear distinguishes the direction a sound is coming from, since we only have two ears. With real-life sound I suppose a sound coming from behind would be quieter due to the shape of the ears, whereas in front of you the sound would bounce off of the earlobes and be louder. This being said, do you really need more than two decent speakers to hear in many directions? As long as the headphones are able to simulate the sound waves for each ear, if those waves mimic real-life, how could the ear tell the difference? Can the ear actually tell direction by the way the sound wave bounces into the ear or something?

Although I can't tell you the science behind it, it is absolutely possible to discern the "source" of positional audio in games through headphones. Amusingly, the ones marketed as being for surround gaming tend to be pretty awful at it, though this is by no means universal. The qualities that make headphones good for perceiving surround are mostly the same that make them good for everything else. For more information, I'll redirect your attention to the same threads I linked to earlier in the thread.

NamelessPFG explains at great length the various technologies that have been used to put positional audio games with a focus on how they apply to headphone surround gaming.

MadLustEnvy approaches things more from the console side of things, but the thread is still highly valuable to PC gamers because he has tested and reviewed an absurd number of headphones of varying price ranges. If gaming is even a secondary purpose in buying a new set of headphones, this thread is an invaluable resource.

Wait, Sennheiser makes bad quality headphones? Could have fooled me...who's supposed to make "the best" headphones then?

Who said that?

I think the point people here were trying to make was that the PC 3xx headphones are of lower quality than many other Sennheiser headphones, so people were saying they'd just stick with those and use a clip-on mic.

...PC 360 uses the 598 drivers. the 598 are going to be better of course but the 360 uses the same drivers nevertheless
