Which CPU is better for folding?

Thread Starter
Hello all,
I just need to know which is a better CPU for folding, the FX8120,2500k or 3570k? Which one will pump out the most Work Units/Points? This comp will only fold nothing else.
Thanks biggrin.gif

The 3570k will net the most points clock for clock. eg: if all the chips are overclocked to 4.5ghz, the 3570k will net the most ppd.
However, in general, the 2500k will clock slightly higher than the 3570. In my experience, the 2500k has to clock 150mhz higher to match a 3570k.
eg: a 3570k@4.5ghz=2500k@4.65ghz.
At the same clock speed, the 3570k will also consume less power.

The 8120 can match a 2500k, but at almost double the power consumption. So, unless your already invested in AM3 socket, i would go with Sandy/Ivy.

Thanks that is exactly the info i was looking for,i completely forgot about the power consumption on the 8120...saved me there! No i havent committed to anything yet, well i guess i have now. The 3570k it is!
Thanks again that was perfect! thumb.gif +rep

That actually helps me out as well. I am thinking about building a machine that will be folding some and was wondering why Bulldozer wasn't being used. I have been waiting on Piledriver to decide what CPU to use. If the only downside of Bulldozer is the power consumption, that should be fixed in Vishera.

np. I tend to shy away from suggesting products that person haven't asked about.....but: an 2600k/3770k is the best bang for your buck desktop folding CPU.

@ 4.6ghz a 2500k/3570k is going to push ~23-25k ppd.
@ 4.6ghz s 2600k/3770k is going to push ~34-36k ppd.

I would Possibly say the 8120, The 8120 Dosent Pull Loads of Power Unless you Overclock it and start adding more volts.

the fx series isnt a great folder. i was also going to suggest the 2600/3770. having those extra threads helps a lot for folding.

Agreed. If you have an existing AM3 platform to drop an 8120 in, the 8120 will match a 2500k clock for clock. And much cheaper than buying a whole new platform.

However, even at stock, an 8120 draws roughly 50 more watts than a 2500k. (Source)

And as Adrenaline mention, the power consumption scales up rapidly over 1.3v.
