Today AMD is letting us preview the new HD 7950 3GB card that will be shipping soon with updated clock speeds and Boost support. The new base clock speed of the HD 7950 will be 850 MHz, compared to the 800 MHz of the original reference HD 7950. The GPU will be able to boost as high as 925 MHz. That should give the new 7950s a solid performance gain over the original with a clock speed increase of as much as 15%.

"The 670 Effect"

If it can get close enough to the 670 (a 15% increase vs. the orig. should be close), it could be a good buy @ $350, vs. $400 on the 670

puhleeze! This is yet ANOTHER desperation move on AMD's part. They've been losing profit ever since kepler arrived on the scene. Why do you think the 7950 sales WELL below it's original price of $500.00?

When the consumers aren't buying your product, you have no choice but to lower prices.

Doesn't really matter. 7950 was always the better card because of its overclocking potential; now you just see the gap close ever so slightly in reviews.

ppl will make the obvious choice. The card offers 50% OC headroom. It kills 660ti at its price point. & 670 at its performance.

The gtx 680 is desperation and so is everything below it. NVIDIA needs to salvage a big die to compete with the much smaller Pitcarin.

But the thing is they can't go much lower that $349. At the same time Nvidia's 680, the card which is much cheaper to produce goes for $499.

So what does AMD do? The only sensible thing they can do in this situation.

They protect the margins, by keeping the price tag.
They sacrifice TDP*Noise and take back some of Tahiti's generous OC potential.

GCN is somewhat similar to Buldozer in this:
Underlying design, and basic principles are great, but it's simply not as refined product as competition's offering.
Although this is much less pronounced with SI, you can see these glimpses of BDZ character.
at the time of my purchase, 7950 and 670 were the same price. If i was deciding between the two now, i'd probably go with 7950. 670 can OC to match or surpass 680 though.
