Are DVI-D or DSUB connections hd?

Thread Starter
Building a PC and at some point i'm going to buy a monitor.
I noticed that on most hd monitors (by hd i mean 1920x1080) only had dvi-d and dsub connections.
I have never heard of these as this is my first build and on TV's you only get HDMI
But if the res is 1920x1080 then they must be HD?
Also do either of them transmit sound aswell as video like HDMI?

Someone clear things up thanks.

DVI doesn't carry sound
DVI max out at 1,920 × 1,200@60Hz for single link and can go over 2,560 × 1,600@60Hz for a dual-link

D means the signal is digital only, sub (or I) is analog+digital (so you can use a dvi to vga adapter)

Grats for your new build thumb.gif

1920x1080 is (full) HD, speaking video resolution-wise.

but I thought D-Sub (or more accurately D-Sub DA15) = VGA Connector = Analog only, not Analog+Digital.

DVI-I is analog+digital.

DVI single link according Wikipedia will carry up to 60 Hz of 1,915 × 1,436 pixels (standard 4:3 ratio), 1,854 × 1,483 pixels (5:4 ratio), or 2,098 × 1,311 (widescreen 16:10 ratio).
Cable length is also a limiting factor here, still from the same source. In general cable lengths up to 4.5 m (15 ft) will work for displays at resolutions of 1,920 × 1,200

D-sub also doesn't carry sound obviously and the max res is limited to 2048×1536 @85 Hz

I might be wrong, fell free to CMIIW. smile.gif

Dvi will ne 1920 x 1080 that being said 1080 p option only is avail on HDMI or better .most van only afford 360 p nitrate on a 1080 p screen for streaming.this is why some 480 p look better then towellie.use thé propre nitrate for tour chosen res ans laugh at 95 % of thé 1080p streamer with bitrate set to 3500 kbps(h264)

I'm not sure what "nitrate" means. But from what I understand you're saying DVI will not able to do 1920x1080 resolution, only HDMI or "better" does.

You might have been misinformed, I'm typing this post on 1920x1200 @60Hz monitor through DVI here. Sorry if I didn't get you right.

Or you could invest in some proper speakers instead of the garbage that comes on your monitor. wink.gif And no, I'm not talking "PC Multimedia Speakers" either, I'm talking real speakers. wink.gif

Honestly, DSUB (or VGA), DVI, or HDMI will all handle 1920x1080 just fine. I'm on 2560x1600 with DVI right now. I wouldn't let the connections be your limiting factor here.
