WD Caviar Black 1TB - 00Y9A0 - discussion - Page 2

Here is my WD2002FAEX results. (western digital 2tb hdd - caviar black)

I'm having problems at start up with it disapearing then coming back randomly.

So annoying!

Do these test results look ok?

On start up i get

"A disk read error"

"Press ctrl + alt + del"

i restart and sometimes it loads some times it doesnt. Russian roulette!

doh.gif I bought one of these drives today. Same batch number you mentioned. Where are the articles you read about the issues?

Look at the reviews on Newegg. Probably 30 people in a row complaining about how loud these are. Many of them reporting failures shortly after installation. Taking mine back in a couple days.

I just went through google and checked all message boards, I haven't seen anything good about this batch, only bad things.

So far my drive is working and since my OS is on my SSD, I can't really complain about the noise.

Unluckily I didn't buy this from an online store, otherwise I would have had the right to return the drive within 2 weeks with no questions asked. redface.gif

My SSD finally arrived yesterday so i was able to set the SSD as my OS Drive and the WD as back up. I also switched it to another quick swap drive slot in my tower. Since then i havent heard any bad noises or any Houdini disappearing acts. All is good i think?

The thing is it's the "newer" version of Caviar Blacks. wink.gif

I guess it's a bit sad to know that the drive isn't one of the best versions of the Caviar Blacks around, but I guess we will have to live with it?

By the way, the version also has locked AAM, which means you can NOT change the value with HD Tune (for example).

I can hear mine crunching away over the noise of 6 120mm fans at 1850 rpm. I paid a premium for the caviar black. $120 versus other 1tb drives for $70-90.

What about the seagate barracuda?
I unhooked all fans on my computer except one on the radiator, took the side panels off and put my camera on the inside of the case. I recorded a couple videos of this drive.

th_hdd.jpg

You can hear ambient for the first few seconds, followed by me snapping my fingers for kind of a reference- then I turn on the PC. At first you just hear the noise from the fan and my chair creak a couple times.

th_hddsqueal.jpg

In this video the PC is already running. Its sitting idle on the desktop. I launch Crysis, the 4 second mark is where the Crysis loading screen comes up and the EA, Crytek, Nvidia screens are doing their things. HDD starts squealing when this loading screen is up.

Bah, couldnt get Photobucket video to imbed.

I can hear clicks from the hard drive. Maybe it's the loud seek or head parking?

According to that SMART report, the drive is in flawless condition. Not that it's been on long enough to get a good sense of if it will last or not.

Drives can click when seeking, parking/unparking, or when calibrating due to changes in temperature. Most of the time it's nothing.

I've got drives that are identical batches, with sequential serial numbers, that do not perform the same.

It's not that uncommon.

Is AAM enabled or disabled?

Someone even said that this new "Black" drive is just a relabeled Caviar Blue because of the jumper settings for the SATA speed and now the AAM.

The noises you recorded are very similar to mine.

I think the AAM is set to high performance by default, so the drive would have as low access time as possible.

On real Caviar Blacks, if you set the AAM to low noise, I read that the access times go up to 18ms from 12ms.

I wonder if it possible to change the firmware for this drive to another version that would unlock AAM or is it hardware disabled?

hatlesschimp, could you check if your drives have firmware called 01.01V01?
