tubing sizes?

Thread Starter
I am planning on using 3/8id 1/2od tubing and compression fittings everywhere I can. I was hoping to use a blue transparent tubing but really just want to know what the best is? I really would hate to buy something and it split on me because I didn't take the time to ask the people who have done this before.

also to make sure I am ok with that wall thickness
post #2 of 8
I use this PrimoFlex Pro UV Blue tubing, but in 7/16" x 5/8". It looks a little purplish in regular light, but a very nice blue under UV. It's not very transparent either, only slightly. Good tubing though that is easy to work with and I haven't gotten any crud in my loop from using it.

Edit: click on my name and you'll see it in the picture.

It is very unlikely that the tubing will split on you, the only real problem with tubing is clouding.

This is caused by the plasticiser leaching out of the tubing and forming a milky white substance ont he inner bore of the tube. In extreme cases it can also form clumps of gunk in your blocks (usually the CPU block). There is much debate over which brand of tubing is better or worse for this. Primochill has had a reasonable track record, save for a recent problem, as has Tygon. Personally I have used Masterkleer and ClearFlex tubing, they both cloud a little after a few months but nothing extreme (no gunk in my blocks).

3/8 * 1/2" is OK to use, just be aware that the thinner wall can make it prone to kinking. Try to avoid tight turns or use some anti kink coils to brace the tubing (look at my sig rigs for examples of anti kink coils).

3/8 * 5/8" is less prone to kinking, might be worth looking into if you can source the tubing and fittings. There should be minimal price difference between the two.

3/8 x 5/8 is my favorite, as stated above by GJ, it is very difficult to kink and easy to work with.

Can't recommend Primochill. They may not be the only company that has the plasticizer issue of late, but they have been dishonest, at least to me. I am now using duralene. Just installed it a bit over a week ago. So far, so good.

Keep away from the PrimoChill for now. Mine had gone completely clouded over with a thick layer of crap in a month. I even found a bit in my CPU block.

I have just gotten some clear tygon, so I am hoping that this will not give me the same issues. If you want colours there are some decent dyes available from, ironically, primochill. I have never had issues with the dye staining my gear or clogging the blocks (the stuff in my cpu block mentioned about was whitish the same as the crap on the tubes).

Primochill seems hit or miss. I have numerous friends that run it (for as long as 2yrs+ and as little as 2 months) and none have had issues, all have ordered from high-turnover sites (specifically PPCs and Jab Tech) So I am willing to give it a shot, as I can't find any other solid white non-UV tubing...

I bought mine at PPCs. Mine has been in since February and it looks great. My reservoir is crystal clear still. I run straight distilled with a kill coil and a few drops of PT Nuke. No issues.
