Recording Vinyl

Thread Starter
For a while now I have been given the task of recording my Dad's vinyl collection, so it can be put onto CD's / ipod.

I'm no expert, but I'm going to try and summarize the situation.

I'm using the program Ableton Live 8, which I got with a nio 2/4 by novation.
We previously recorded with this setup:

Truntable > Amp > nio > PC, and all worked fine, but there were some balancing issues.

Unfortunately, the amp went pop on us a few weeks ago. frown.gif
Following this, I discovered the balancing issue was solved by recording using the line in on my Xonar DGX, rather than the (guitar) line in on the nio.
I have tried using guitar amps, but have not had much success.

I therefore need some recommendations on a relatively cheap amplifier, so that we can record with this setup:

Turntable > Amp > Xonar DGX

I'm not looking to spend a fortune, I just need something to get the job done, although wouldn't mind spending a bit more on something I could continue using for something else.

Thanks in advance, and feel free to ask for any more info, as I said I'm no expert and I've probably left some bits out. tongue.gif

Cheers cheers.gif

So the turntable doesn't have a pre-amp? You can get another amp with a phono-level in or just get a phono pre-amp and hook that directly to the line in on the DGX. The phono pre-amp would be cheaper but obviously you could only use it specifically with the turntable.

Also, (and I'm just guessing at the quality of your deck and records) I've had some good results with the hiss, crackle, pop and hum removers in Goldwave (and Audacity). You might want to try recording straight into those. Its been a few years since I've used Ableton Live but it's more geared to live performance, you might have to go hunting for plugins to get the same filters you'll find in an application geared specifically towards recording.

Thank you for your reply.

I don't believe that it does, the turntable is a Pioneer Stereo Turntable model PL-512, if that helps.

I was wondering if something like this would do the trick:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Renkforce-E-SA9-Mini-Hi-Fi-Amplifier/dp/B002EWNQOE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=ZIOJXL8W314O&coliid=IJMKUXONSG9TJ

I'll look into using a different program like Audacity.

The Renkforce you linked does show up if I search Amazon for a Phono Preamp from it's spec's though it's only line-level and not phono so to me it looks like it's not suitable. Phono-level is below line-level and needs pre-amplification, either an amp specifically with a phono-level input (becoming rare these days) or a phono pre-amp which you can then connect to any line-level input (any amp or straight to a soundcard line-in).

I'd grab a phono pre-amp and hook that straight to the soundcard, once you have one you can look at any amp/system for playback rather than needing one with a phono-in. My deck came with the Project Phono Box MM and that's the only one I've used. You may want to wait for someone with more experience to get the best performing model at any particular price point.

Pick up a used Cambridge 540P phono pre, it sounds great for the money.

So I need to by a pre amp as well as an amp?

So something like this paired up with the Renkforce linked to earlier?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SOUNDLAB-PRE-AMPLIFIER-PHONO-TURNTABLE/dp/B000NJ4KPO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=ZIOJXL8W314O&coliid=I2WVMEDXU1L0IJ

Is the Cambridge 540P both an amp and a pre amp?
I have found one on ebay that is only £15.
