[Softpedia]Stand Instead of Sitting at Your Monitor and Never Grow Fat or Sick

Obesity and lower back pains are two of the main conditions that can arise from excessive sitting, which is a problem for people whose work demands it.

There isn't much they can do really, except get up and walk more often than not.

For those who do have a choice though, standing desks are the way to go. The video embedded below is a testimony made by a gamer.

Made this thread while standing up thumb.gif

Here's some interesting facts concerning sitting all day and your health:

Not a bad idea, wasn't there some LoL player who had his computer set up on a treadmill, and just walked all day when he was playing, ended up losing quite a bit of weight, IIRC. Though I already hit the gym everyday, and the last thing I want to do afterwards is stand at my computer tongue.gif

I wish automobile manufacturers would adopt this idea. Probably improves concentration a little.

Nice idea, but its already been debunked.
Quote:
Sitting at your desk all day is killing you whether or not you exercise, which is why so many people are building standing desks. But the ergonomics team at Cornell University points out that standing also has its problems. Their suggestion: Just make a point to get off your butt regularly.

Quote:
Sit to do computer work. Sit using a height-adjustable, downward titling keyboard tray for the best work posture, then every 20 minutes stand for 2 minutes AND MOVE. The absolute time isn't critical but about every 20-30 minutes take a posture break and move for a couple of minutes. Simply standing is insufficient. Movement is important to get blood circulation through the muscles. Research shows that you don't need to do vigorous exercise (e.g. jumping jacks) to get the benefits, just walking around is sufficient. So build in a pattern of creating greater movement variety in the workplace (e.g. walk to a printer, water fountain, stand for a meeting, take the stairs, walk around the floor, park a bit further away from the building each day).

How tall would most cars need to be to accommodate that...

I think the idea is interesting, I think there's one guy at work who normally works at his desk standing. I can't help but think that first few weeks would be oh so unpleasant though as you get used to standing all the time instead of sitting...

There are so many other factors not taken into consideration with rag of hear statistics that I'm appalled it could be published as fact.

Wait, no I'm not, because this is media, and that's what it does.

I don't think I could stand a standing desk. Standing stationary for hours at a time for thesis research would be more brutal then the heaviest metal album.

It would also make my Wrangler seem as aerodynamic as a Prius in comparison. It would also probably make my Wrangler seem as gas efficient as a Prius as well.

Wouldn't standing over a long period of time cause the blood flow to move towards your feet, thus preventing a necessary amount reaching the brain? I don't know, but that's what I've been told.

The problem isn't sitting per se, it's bad posture over sustained time period.
