Standing up will greatly increase your risk of varicose veins, all of the chefs I work with have them or are getting them after being on their feet for 8+ hours a day.
Standing up in a single spot all day is slightly healthier or just as unhealthy as sitting down if you ask me, you need to move around.

I stand up for 8-12 hours a day every week at work, sometimes without moving my legs for 2-3 hours. I have to say, it can't be that much healthier than sitting down with good posture.
If you do this and you lean down even a little to type or to use your mouse your back and legs will get irritated after a few hours of doing so, I do similar motions at work all day... it takes its toll after a while.

LOL. I love how they just go from one extreme to the other. Got to love the sensationalist media and the general stupidity of people. "We sit too much and have a problems with our health so how do we fix this? We trade sitting for standing and doing the same things! Surely that will solve everything." rolleyes.gif

I swear I should sign up for some of these "studies" and see what conclusions they can come up with an outlier as I seem to contradict just about everything they put out these days. It's like I'm from the inverse universe. biggrin.gif

I used to do this a few years ago, go look at stronglifts.com for a lot of awesome info btw biggrin.gif . I had one of those bar counters where you would have a high stool and just stood there and I would stand at my PC most of the time. Sitting shortens your hip flexors and basically causes all sorts of problems with your lower back, hips, knees, etc that can cause injuries when you squat or do other barbell exercises or if you are lazy then you'll just get injured doing some everyday movement eventually. I remember telling people I use my computer standing up and they would mock me for it even after I explained why. It will make you stop playing games after a while to take a break even if you are healthy which is good. If you have a hard floor it will hurt your feet esp if you are barefoot but if you have a rug it should be fine, but I didnt.

But overall I prefer to have a normal desk because its more comfortable to study/game like that. I shake my legs a lot on reflex anyway so my legs are always active and if you do your proper stretches a few times a day for your legs/hips and do normal exercise you should be fine. Just do dynamic streches and soft tissue work and strength training and your good.

Ideally I would have a moveable desk that I could change positions since when I play sc2 ladder I want to be sitting, when I do anything else I can stand and not really care.

We have these at work. Makes working on computers a lot easier just because you don't have to bend your back or have to sit down when it's a quick service. D:

Sitting isn't really killing you lol.

Yeah the video is a breakdown of the reddit image.

Standing all day or for hours at a time is extremely bad for your back.

Ask any cashier, or work as one for a week.
