leaky capacitors?

Thread Starter
while modding my computer i decided to open my PSU up and see if that would help me when i go to sleeve those cables. I then noticed this...

what i am talking about is the goo. i have a fear that it means my capacitor has leaked.
more pics of different spots.

really odd thing is my PSU has been working aka computer turns on and works fine (aside from some seemingly random shutdowns)
though this might explain the shutdowns.

is that what this is or hopefully some type of insulation (please but not likely)

By "leaking" you mean where I've circled yes?
If so from my experience with capacitors, it looks like it could have leaked. It could just be cheap glue/insulation as you've mentioned. It's hard to tell from those photos

If that's the same substance on those blue capacitors/resistors is the same as what you suspect has "leaked" it's suggested to me that it's just some form of glue/insulation.. Looks like I'm not wrong biggrin.gif

As for the random shutdowns, by looking at your sig rig that's a generic PSU? It shure looks like it on the inside. heheh rolleyes.gif
I know because when I was running a C2D E8500 and Radeon 4850 off a generic 430W it would shutdown every so often randomly also.

Safe to say that if it's shutting down like that you should at least try a new PSU because it's a sign of not being able to handle the load that you're throwing at it. By any chance does it only shutdown under load or just randomly?

EDIT: Hope this PSU lives on wink.gif

yes what you have circled is what I was talking about. the PSU is a ultra VX600 old enough that ultra doesn't carry info on it (even legacy items)
Ive been running skyrim on full max with the HD texture packs and all sorts of visual mods. Its never shutdown during gameplay. (crashed once, but no shutdowns)
it just seems to happen when its sitting there.

I've opened many old items and yes, that's glue. Yours was just applied very badly that's all. It's fine.
