Scrap my xfire 6970s?

post #1 of 20
Thread Starter
I'm itching for an upgrade with my crossfire 6970s, i'm thinking of going with one gtx 690.

1. Would this be enough of an improvement to satisfy my itch to upgrade.
2. Is it useless if i'm running a Phenom x-6 1100t @ 4.1ghz.

Any input is appreciated.

1. There's nothing really better unless you feel like going trifire 7970s/tri-sli GTX 680s. And xfire 7970s would probably satisfy your urge quite nicely as well, especially cuz the extra vram might help out with the resolutions that your catleap is pushing.
2. I feel like a 690 would be a pretty massive bottleneck on your Phenom II. Not useless, but still a heavy bottleneck.

Unfortunately friend, most here will say and I tend to agree that a 690 is simply too much power for that 1100t. Even at 4.1ghz I doubt you'd see much, if any increase from your current setup. Have you ever tested how well they scale in CF-X ? Run one card at your max overclock and then run the second at the benchmark of your choice. If you're not seeing an 80% or better increase then you'll have your proof. The HD 69xx drivers are very mature at this point and I just sold a pair of 6970 lightnings and they scaled at over 90% @ 1ghz. I would do that before dropping 1k on a gpu. With a 1k budget, personally I'd sell your amd stuff and one 6970, grab a 2500k on the cheap and pick up a 6990 for trifire. Now there's a setup that would rival any 690. Man, I'm getting all excited just thinking about it. That's what I would do and it's my opinion only. Those 1100t's are fetching nice prices these days and that's one of the very best am3+ boards around. You could get close to $400 for your amd stuff and that one 6970. Go intel for $350, pick up a 6990 and you could maybe even get yourself two more catleaps with the money left over. thumb.gif

I've been dreaming of trifire 6970's since that 6990 got released. tonguesmiley.gif

1100T = $140 possibly more
Crosshair IV = $120 pretty easily } TOTAL $440ish $400 for a quick sale
6970 = $180=$200

2500k = $170 used no problem. Bnib $200ish
Asus P8P67 WS Revolution $140, tops. } TOTAL ~$775 For a total of $225 left over
AMD 6990 = $450ish ? Not really sure. I bet you could find one for a little less, but that's pretty close.

So my math was off, 2 catleaps would push you way over budget, but it would put you on your way to adding a 2nd and that setup would even destroy a catleap in just about any game.

Haha you're right that all does sound exciting, i've always wanted a 6990, I really wanted to wait to go intel until my second build in the next couple years however, but this is very tempting ha.

Two 6970s = 1 7970 or 1 680, so yea it's a huge gain going to 1 690. However, I'm not sure I would blow that amount of cash to run it on an AMD chip.

As others have mentioned, I would much recommend you upgrading from your AMD platform to an Intel platform. Just by doing that, you will get increased performance on your 6970CF. I used to run 2x 5870s with a PhenomII x4 955 at 4ghz+ and the 955 bottlenecked so bad that my 5870CF was running at half speed (50~60% usage) so that I was only getting the performance of a single card during CF mode.

AMD Phenom II is bad with CF/SLI setup, but a single card it is good. I had a Phenom II 555 x2 unlock to x3 at 4.0ghz and a HD5970 and I had no bottleneck. AMD Phenom II is bad at using 2 video card not 1 video card with 2 GPUs.

Even so, the GTX 690 is a big card to handle.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and argue the opposite.
AMD chips have more PCIe lanes than their Intel counterparts ((generally speaking, 32 vs 16), also discounting the 40-lane SB-E) so putting two cards in two different slots and having them run at full x16 bandwidth would probably help. If it weren't processor limited so severely. And a single 690 would essentially be running two 680s each at PCIe 2 x8. Add that to the serious CPU limitations and you might not see any gains at all in some scenarios over 6970's.
