That being said, is the D2X better than the DG/DGX?
Thanks a lot ! smile.gif

A sound card would be least of my concerns with an onboard EQ/5.1 digital decoder on the Z-5500. However, IMO if you're wanting a sound card that is "future proofed", a DG would fit the bill as well. I can't speak for the sound quality of a D2X, other than the obvious useless software options with the D2X vs DG, as I've only owned an STX/DG but sound differences were minimal without FLAC/high quality speaker equipment. I can say for the gamer that a DG(with a built in headphone amp) is the best choice.

The most important thing with using a sound card over onboard audio is the sound quality. Onboard audio is not as good as most people think they are, just because it says realtek on the codec. Sure realtek updates there codecs. But a good sound card would always be the best choice, Unless you have cheap speakers or headphones. Which would make you not notice how the sound card sounds, Then it be something totally different.

Which why having a good speaker/headphone is also just as important as having a good sound card. Alot of times people use Good speakers/headphones with onboard audio and not knowing what they missing. Thinking they not missing much. But they really are, I had times where I had to use AD700's with on-board audio temporary and it wasn't pretty.

Only reason I would see the op using the onboard audio is if hes using Digital, which then the onboard audio would just act like a Digital Transport and teh digital speakers would just be using the dac that inside them. Which comes into play. Also if onboard audio doesn't have a Encoder which is important for gaming over digital. Unless he like using the speakers upmixing options which isnt good IMO as I used to have a Z-5500 my self. Then he would want a sound card with the Encoders. So he can encode 5.1 analog into either DD live or DTS so the games will come out in 5.1 over digital.

I'm gonna pick up a dg today after your testimony lol, worth the gamble. I have had my z5500 in storage about 2yrs and now that I have them on onboard sound they don't sound as good as when I was using a creative labs platinum card (been a few years, can't remember model), I just didn't wanna drop $200 on sound when I might go sli and need to pull the card out.

Interesting... I was also looking at different Xonar sound cards for my new build and I was going to get the DX. However, the built in amp in the DG/DGX sounds pretty good on paper.

The Xonar DG in-graded amp is quite Decent. But up to 150ohm headphones on its highest settings. Which will work for some headphones. That it can supply enough power to at their ohms.

Does it support 5.1 analog output? How does it fare in comparison to the Xonar DG or D2X? and since its in the price range of the ST/STX, is its performance anywhere near these cards?

I;m currently using the Creative T6200. I don't use headphones unless I absolutely have to and don't intend to use them either.

This is for everyone : I do not have any headphones and do not intend to use one in the foreseeable future. So please, base your suggestions and advice on the use of the sound card with speakers, specifically my current 5.1 ones.

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone. I really appreciate it! smile.gif

Is this true from the newegg reviews?

Other Thoughts: OUTPUT ANALOG... I cannot stress this enough. If you are buying a sound card like this and outputting digital, you are NOT taking advantage of the glorious DAC in this 8788 chipset that is basically what makes this thing shine.. more than any other component.. You have to spend about a thousand dollars on a Stello External DAC to go beyond this type of sound clarity..

So if you output DIGITAL, you are just bypassing the DAC to be handled by your receivers, which is guaranteed to sound inferior unless you've got a $1000 Marantz.

Not trying to thread jack. I am also looking for a sound card but I have been using S/PDIF
