The most important thing with using a sound card over onboard audio is the sound quality. Onboard audio is not as good as most people think they are, just because it says realtek on the codec. Sure realtek updates there codecs. But a good sound card would always be the best choice, Unless you have cheap speakers or headphones. Which would make you not notice how the sound card sounds, Then it be something totally different.
Which why having a good speaker/headphone is also just as important as having a good sound card. Alot of times people use Good speakers/headphones with onboard audio and not knowing what they missing. Thinking they not missing much. But they really are, I had times where I had to use AD700's with on-board audio temporary and it wasn't pretty.
Only reason I would see the op using the onboard audio is if hes using Digital, which then the onboard audio would just act like a Digital Transport and teh digital speakers would just be using the dac that inside them. Which comes into play. Also if onboard audio doesn't have a Encoder which is important for gaming over digital. Unless he like using the speakers upmixing options which isnt good IMO as I used to have a Z-5500 my self. Then he would want a sound card with the Encoders. So he can encode 5.1 analog into either DD live or DTS so the games will come out in 5.1 over digital.Edited by admflameberg - 8/14/12 at 1:35pm
