Can a AX850, power 3 x 580?

Thread Starter
I want to know if my AX850 could power a 3rd GTX580 3gb.

I'm sure I've seen someone run 4 x 580's on a AX1000 if I remember correctly.

3 way GTX580's will pull about 60 amps - 720 watts, peaking at 70 amps.

That PSU is enough for only the cards. -_-

Right so its only just not enough because of the CPU draw really frown.gif

ah well, I might wait till the 7 series comes out (as long as they aren't dx12 or some other worthwhile advance) and grab 3 x 680 4gb's for a good price as they should work just fine.

Thanks

Thanks

Its not enough because you just dont have enough power period, not because of the cpu draw tongue.gif

also thats just if you keep your cards stock, if you overclock a lot that can change things a lot, i pretty much maxed my AX850 with a pair of 6970s lol.

Cant imagine your 2 580s are struggling that much now anyways biggrin.gif

An AX859 can power 3 DC welders (not really, just one) thumb.gif I have a very very hard time believing gfx cards can pull 60 amps.

A GTX 580 at max load will pull 244Watts

244Watts/12V = 20.3 Amps

20 Amps x 3 Graphics Cards

You do the math.

using a PSU calc with his sig rig specs I got about 864Watts recommended. I always add 100+ to this guess since I don;t know if he will be OCing anything else.

I usually recommend a 1kW for tri-SLI of cards >200W.

If you leave everything at stock clocks, it'll work. Maybe a modest 4.5GHz OC on the cpu. But the fan will ramp up on the AX850 and work overtime. And I don't think it'll be a good idea for this psu in the long term powering all that.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll be honest I don't overclock these cards at all (apart from some initial bench tests which they got too 950/2200 @ max locked voltages), the reason being I love the quietness of these cards as at stock they don't reach over 65 degrees and never need to go higher than 60% fan speed which is very quiet.

The main reason I wanted too go for three was for cheep future proofing, at the moment I've never really dropped below 60fps @ 2560x1440 with FXAA, however at that resolution adding max AA still pushes these cards too some less than desired frames especially in heavily modded Skyrim.

My CPU runs fine at a conservative 4.2 so it runs cool.

I'm starting too get old I think, preferring cool & quiet over OC performance. I mean including GPU's & PSU my case holds: 18 fans all running as quiet as possible thumb.gif
