If GPUs make a better CPU than a CPU does, why don't we use them?

Thread Starter
Is the common statement that a GPU is many times more powerful than a CPU false? Why don't we use GPUs as CPUs if they're so much more powerful?

And yes I know there's tesla and things like that, but I mean why doesn't the mainstream computer market?

GPU's only compute in parallel, hence the extreme performance when given a single task, whereas a CPU is performing multiple tasks at the given moment.

If you were to run an Operating System on a GPU, you would be having so many headaches it would end up killing you. It's just not optimal at all to use the GPU as a primary processor.

So another part of it is GPUs do one thing only, and it's already pretty much determined, but CPUs are taking random things and turning them into other random things?

CPUs are more general processors while GPUs are better at specific workloads (i.e. highly threaded, low intradependent floating-point applications).

CPUs are easier to work on because there is less tuning/optimization of software to run code on them. However, GPU development gets easier every year and eventually the line between CPU and GPU will blur.

We will see the day when it just becomes the PU, Processing Unit, and it handles everything at ridiculous speeds.

Which is why AMD and Intel are both working on integrating gpus with a cpu. For now, its just an igp, eventually the gpu will just be another part of the cpu sharing the same die and cache.

CPU is both good at processing complex tasks, and simple tasks.
GPU is awesome at processing simple tasks and does it very fast, however, it is slow at processing complex tasks.

to better understand this, you can think GPU as a server type CPU, those CPUs that have lots of cores but low clock speed.
