buying extremely overpowered PSU - Page 3

Actually if you're looking to upgrade down the path, then I'd give a thumbs up for something slightly overpowered, e.g. if your requirement is 500, take 800 or 750, something like that.
Now I'm saying this because with a 955, & 5670 I took an 850, and eventually landed up with 560Tis in SLI, and now am thinking of i7 3930k if Piledriver fails. I thought of taking a 750 but I got an offer I couldn't refuse. Well it wasn't a good one since an 850 with no modular is a pain for cable management, but I managed somehow.

And even at 1100. At 85% efficiency that's only 935w. That's another 265w for whatever given a 1200W PSU.

it wasnt a constant 1100w most of the time it was in the low 1000's but on some synthetic tests it would peak up to 1100w. point is that peak could cause issues. i wouldnt run 4 480's on a 1200w PSU. nothing good comes from running a PSU at 100% load (unless you need some extra heat in the winter)

In what universe is 935 100% of 1200?


I once experimented with an SR-2 and four 580 Classifieds. I could not get more than 1000W of DC load no matter what I tried; if I had water cooling I might have hit 1200W or more, but with just a regular aircooled system 1000W was the ceiling.

the same universe apparently that 3 GTX 480's = 4 GTX 480's?

read the post more thoroughly maybe? the 1100 number was 3 cards not 4.
