Problem with my home pc getting steady internet

Thread Starter
Ok this problem has driven me to the point of throwing my pc out the window. It started maybe 3 to 4 months ago but not matter what I do my home pc will connect to the internet for a few minutes and then drop the internet connection all together. Sometimes it reconnects, others it doesn't and even if it does it's usually a crappy connection. While this is occurring I can boot up my laptop connect fine and surf the web without issue on the same network. This has happened with 2 different usb adapters and a pci e wireless card I just bought and with 2 different wireless networks. One point to stress is that the home pc has full signal with it's connection and isn't more than 20 feet away from the router and it NEVER disconnects from the wireless connection, just web pages and downloads stop working.

The primary modem/router right now is a Zoom 5350 connected to comcast and my home pc is windows 7 64 bit running currently an asus PCE-N10 although previously I used a belkin and linksys adapter. The other network is dsl on a linksys router and that has the same issues too. I'm not a fan of the all in one zoom unit but given that i've tried multiple other wireless and wired devices on it and they all work fine I can't really say it would be the problem.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to try, I am a bit of a novice when it comes to home networking so I'm a bit frustrated.

You're connected on LAN or Wifi? If you are Wifi most likely it is 2.4Ghz, if a neighbor turns on their microwaves, you will be cut out.

For that solution, use LAN or look for 5Ghz adapter, you will need 5Ghz router as well.

I guess I could see that but shouldn't that disconnect my laptop too? All the other devices that I connect via wi-fi never have trouble and yes the pc is on wi-fi since the router is a bit far for a cable.

Few options here:
In order of my recommendations. Every wifi adaptor I find for desktops never live up to my expectations. The built in wifi/bluetooth on newer desktop motherboards are a step in the right direction.

1.) Use Gigabit ethernet, if your crazy about wires they make flat cat6e ethernet cords and they can easily be wound when not in use.
2.) Get a better router that transmits on dual band simultaneously, & get a 5ghz receiver.
3.) Use your laptop to share the internet through its ethernet jack and wire an ethernet cord from laptop to desktop.
4.) Invest in wireless signal repeaters
5.) Network across your homes powerlines using electrical to ethernet adaptors.

If you need any expanse on the following, dont hesitate to ask.

Make sure the power saving for the adapter is set to maximum performance. Try re-installing adapter drivers from the manufacturer. Use WPA or WPA2 security if you aren't already.
If push comes to shove you can always connect the desktop with a powerline kit.

I've owned 4 routers and 3 modem and 3 laptops and 3-4 rigs. LAN and Wifi test. My laptop handle the wifi better, there is a good chance the wifi on the desktop adapter isn't great.

Maybe you can try channel 11 or 9 or 1.

I'm not exactly sure, but I had a similar problem and it had to do with something messing up the strength of my wireless connection. This did not affect my laptops. It seems the way laptop's antenas are set up make it much stronger and have better reception.

I tried a lot of usb adapters and pic/pic-e wirelss cards and nothing seemed to work. Connection would drop often and that annoyed me while gaming. My solution was to simply buy a really long cable and connect it directly to the router. frown.gif

That's what I did. LAN stays connected unless cats bite/chew it.

Other solution is to  update your router firmware. My router is linux based and I end up using the DD-WRT firmware which leads to poor wifi connection. It's a downside but I want DD-WRT features and functions and just to tell you that firmwares could affect the router performances.

That did not help me. I used a buffalo router and also updated to DD-WRT and nada. I then bought a Linksys 160N with stock firmware and then also updated to DD-WRT. I still had the same issues. I don't know where I read this, but it also had to do with the way the house was built and something causing interferance that weakens the WIFI. I don't know if that's true. And now that I'm using LAN for desktops I'm al\ways connected unless my brother's dog bites the cable and cuts it in half... Dam cats and dogs!

I forgot to add that I did try different channels and settings under the DD-WRT firmware and nothing seemed to help.

Not going to try sharing the internet via your laptop's ethernet port? Might be plausible if it causes you so many issues. Of course, both machines would have to be on which may be annoying.
