looking for $100 Intel motherboard to overclock i5 3570k

Thread Starter
so I finally decided to upgrade my AMD Phenom 955 to Intel.

my total budget is ~$300 including processor and motherboard

i've picked the i5 3570k ($219.99 @ Amazon) and plan to overclock to at least 4.5GHZ with my Corsair H50.

I highly prefer Amazon because of no tax and free shipping (i have Amazon Prime), but Newegg is fine I guess.

what I would like in the motherboard...
  • crossfire capability
  • moderate overclocking ability
  • Z77 and PCI 3.0 support
  • Sata 3 / USB 3
  • prefer ATX (because I have gigantic aftermarket GPU cooler that may block the ports on the bottom)
  • FUTUREPROOF

Right now I am looking around the Asrock Z77 Pro3

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT THANKS!!!

current specs:

AMD Phenom 955 x4 ii @ 3.7ghz
MSI GF615M-P31
Corsair XMS3 8GB
HIS Radeon 7850 2GB
Zalman SSD

You won't be able to go 4.5Ghz with an H50

Go for the Pro4. 1 more phase wouldn't hurt if you're overclocking. Should be more stable

Crossfire on these boards are not recommended since they are 16x/4x. You will have more microstutter if you try to CFX.

Do you have a microcenter near by?

If that's the case, you can get the combo under $300 with no problem

You will need to get Asrock Z77 extreme 4 at least. Amazon also has Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H $124 after MIR.

Strange Asrock now costs more than GB. Go with D3H if you can stretch your budget a bit then.

alright I'll see what i can do.

the reason I opened this thread was because my local MicroCenter actually went out of business.

I guess I'll drop the Crossfire idea.

BTW, Newegg has a 10% discount on all Asrock motherboards!

edit: I'll upgrade my cooling so we can ignore cooling for now.

Seriously, you already mentioned the cons of Pro 3. Pro 4 also has weak VRM, and same PCI-E disadvantages. Cheapest atx board without those cons was Extreme 4. Now it's D3H.

Also some people recommend certain Biostar boards. They can also be a good choice.

Some Pro4 have been able to achieve 4.5Ghz. He wanted as close to $100 as possible, so the Pro4 is a good choice for the range.

D3H and Extreme4 are around $135

D3H has too many problems with its USB 3.0 ports

Completely depends on the chips.

I can also run 4.7Ghz on my stock cooler. It's just at 100*C

It all comes down to the preference of the user

Of course it depends on the chip which is why saying an h50 can't get to 4.5ghz is preposterous
