need an external hard drive for my laptop

Hi, I am extremely new to building PC but I am planning to build a 2k pc in the future. But for right now. I need extra space for my Dell XPS 15z laptop. What do you recommend? Some people have recommend me to get a hard drive enclosure/dock. My budget is going to be up to $300. Main concern is going to be how much space it has and how fast it is. Main use for this drive is going to be video editing. I could also just offload stuff from my laptop and use it as a storage unit.

Most drives you find are probably going to have a WD Green or equivalent drive in them. Just find one that has USB 3.0 and avoid poor quality brands.

External drives will be 5400rpm green drives. If you want speed, your best bet is to get a usb dock (preferably usb 3.0) and getting the internal drive you want. At least then, you have the option of a blue or black drive. Also, don't worry about brand, Seagate and Western Digital own pretty much everything. For example, if you get a samsung drive, it'll literally say seagate. For example,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152245
click on the picture and look at the top of the label, it's just a seagate barracuda with the name 'samsung' on it.

To make it short, don't worry about every brand and just choose between Seagate and WD. Once that's done, choose your drive speed, pretty much all externals are 5400rpm so if you want that, then go with either of your two choices. If not, then buy a hdd dock and buy an internal drive of your choice of size/speed.

I think I want a dock and buy a high end drive so that when I start building my computers, I can move it in there. Anybody heard of G-raid drives? I'm really new to these stuff so can anyone give me link to a dock and then a hard drive?

How big of a drive do you need?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136792

2TB WD Black drive. 5-year warranty, fastest mechanical drive there is.

Take a pick from any of those enclosures. You can cheap out a little bit, but you still get what you pay for. ~$25 would be a good price to pay, more if you want higher quality.

Probably best just using it for storage. Especially if you edit videos.
Have you thought about maybe using a NAS?

What is an NAS ? Remember, my budget is around $300, if that's not enough I can go up to $400. And how's this enclosure? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182237

Not really an enclosure and it's not something I would use for external storage.

Looks good. Just know that if somehow mechanical HDD's actually fully saturate SATA II, you won't be able to benefit from that as that enclosure only has SATA II and not SATA III. It's not likely to happen, but if you ever swap out the mechanical for an SSD or something like that, you'll be out of luck.

Since you're spending $40 anyways, you might want to check out this one. It has USB 3.0 outside and SATA III inside.
