Looking for a new, mechanical keybaord

Thread Starter

Hey guys,

about a week ago i posted in this form to try to find a wireless keyboard. However, now that i have been researching, i have changed my mind and have been thinking about a mechanical keyboard. This started when i was in micro center and i saw the Razer Blackwidow ultimate and i decided that i wanted a mechanical keyboard. Unfortunately it is a very expensive keyboard and i was wondering if anyone on OCN could help me find the right mechanical keyboard.

i am a light gamer, and i will be doing a lot of typing on it since i am still in high school and intend for the keyboard to last me through college (and hopefully longer if i end up spending a lot of money). Also, i would like the keyboard to have backlit keys, and as it is my first mechanical keyboard, i do not currently have a preference as to what type of switches the keys are. Right now, i am just trying to assess the types of keyboards out there right now so i don't have a budget, but the cheaper the better.

thanks in advance for the help

The Ducky Shine Version 2 is coming out next month: it's backlit, mechanical, comes in a variety of switches (Cherry MX Blues/Browns would suit your needs the best) and is a full size keyboard with media controls as well. smile.gif

Check out the official OCN Mechanical Keyboard Guide for information about the various switch types and a list of reputable brands.

I'm guessing that you are in America so this link could prove to be helpful.

Hope that helps ya out dude! wink.gif

one quick question, i was looking at the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2013, how would that compare to the Ducky Shine ii in terms of performance and reliability?

Are you concerned about any particular color scheme? tongue.gif (I was)

Anyways, I'm using the Corsair K90, and I'm very happy with it.

Linus´ review unboxing on the keyboard.

It's quite pricey, but mechanical keyboards are definitely worth it. Apart from feeling better, they will generally last longer than the "normal" keyboards, which basically means that it's not even that expensive, compared to its lifetime.

Edit: Oops, thought it was a review tongue.gif

I would strike out the razor, they are just horrific. And the k90 I owned but didn't like. The non mechanical keys are poor to say the least and you end up not pressing them completly when you get used to the reds. So that leaves the ducky or CM Storm Trigger.

Since ull be typing I suggest Browns or Blues.

For brown keyboards I suggest the CM Storm Trigger tho it does have a high profile (not that it should matter because of the wrist wrest) or a Filco majestoouch 2 (though quite pricy)

For blue keyboards I suggest the Das Model S

Happy Hunting for your keyboard

Does that mean that I'm not used to the reds on my K90 yet, after 4 months of use?

I think it's personal preference. I personally like the K90 as it is. Maybe OP should try them in person, if that is a possibility.

Having used the K90 for about a week here is my input, the Macro keys on the side are a pain to use as they are just all bunched together. The wrist rest is very conformable and your hands don't sweat onto it like plastic or metal ones. The mechanical and non mechanical parts of the keyboard are kinda annoying as they fell MUCH different when pressing them and personally i like consistency so that was actually one of the reasons i got rid of it. But here is the most annoying part of the K90 That aluminium Back plate looks very pretty but honestly it makes so much goddamn noise when the keys strike that plate so that can make it a very noisy keyboard depending on how hard you type. (i tend to end up pressing harder when i'm typing in hyperspeed)

Conclusion from me is that it's a nice keyboard but it could be improved, If Corsair did a V2 version of this Keyboard which fixes some of the niggles i have with it then i would probably give it another shot. Until then i will continue on my old worn out Cyborg v7 (non-mechanical) until i find a mechanical that i like.
