Overclocking Sapphire HD 6950 2GB (reference) - Page 4

I know I'm a HUGE noob when it comes to this but I'm learning.. Slowly..

When I attempted to overclock the memory beyond 1500Mhz I didn't see any artifacts but I did start getting lag-spikes during 3DMark which ended with the system locking up (Black screen).

I've seen the Twin frozr cards with the same architecture reach 1600Mhz and up. My question is, how can I get the memory to OC higher? (If possible explain to me how to modify mem voltage because I have no idea how to do that >_<)

DOS? why are you messing around in dos?

you should be using RBE - Radeon Bios Editor.

Its a windows program.

Its a windows program.

I tried boosting my limits in RBE and ended up bricking my card (I've been studying the past
few days and found this is caused because CCC doesn't like the new BIOS and will force
windows to bluescreen).

As for the DOS part, I used the backup copy of my BIOS and flashed it through DOS using
a USB flash drive with ATIFlash (This is before I knew about hot-flashing).

Currently, after messing with everything I'm running 1.23V on the core at 940Mhz and 1400Mhz
on the memory. I'd try to push it more but I doubt I'd see any preformance increase at this point
unless I were to get beyond 1000Mhz on the core, even then degradation will probably take its toll.

I've played around a bit more with my video card (And computer) and after overclocking my processor from 3.4Ghz to 3.8Ghz, my max core clock has increased to 980Mhz stable @ 1.24V. My question is, can I SAFELY overclock higher by increasing the voltage beyond 1.25V (The max recommended voltage)?

I feel like this card can do more and heat isn't an issue its just that I don't wanna have this thing die on me in a few months to a year.

You could just try 1.25v? Haha
You can try 1.26v or something, it shouldn't kill it much faster then say 1.26v as long as you're not folding 24/7 rolleyes.gif

I REALLY need to start doing my homework before asking questions, I guess this card is actually safe to 1.3v. The 1.25 was coming from the research I did on 6970 voltages when I was using the 6970 bios.

My bad redface.gif

I don't know what happened, one minute I was stable at 980Mhz, now suddenly I can't even get beyond 950Mhz.
I'm not seeing any difference between 980Mhz and 940Mhz speed-wise, I think I'm just going to stick at 940 for now.

I'll update if I magically gain stability again.

Wow, tried rebooting?
Also you may or may not find this funny..
Today I booted and played BF3 and I was getting heaps of lag, so I checked if crossfire was on.

Basically after a bit of troubleshooting I realised that my cards were running very quiet so I checked afterburner to find them running at 430MHz! redface.gif
