I agree with everyone saying 690 is overkill for 1080p. I have 1 680 thats on my loop and it games extremely well on my 120hz. So unless you're gaming at a higher res than 1080p a 680 should be more than enough. Plus that money can go else where for your build.
like the 3930k, your loop, or a great monitor thumb.gif

News flash, when you OCN search both ASUS RMA and EVGA RAM, and one has far more complaints than the other, guess who has the crappier RMA service? This works under any and all scenarios. Not saying Asus being worse is necessarily the case, but your argument literally brought nothing to the table here.

I have seen some of Asus's "RMA" efforts. I frankly was disgusted by it, and am thankful that I stick with Gigabyte motherboards for their PCB. I have not seen or heard the same about EVGA. Therefore, I will always end up thinking of Asus as having worse RMA then EVGA. In this instance, EVGA is the lesser evil if you will, or is seen as such due to the very process you have just described. See how that works?

OT: I say grab a nice 1600p and keep that 690.

Then if your going for a better monitor and still want the 690, id go with the korean 27" 1440p screens there the best bang for your buck, i own one, there on ebay and range from $280-$400 depending on what brand you go for.
All three of these brands use the same exact screen, but just different casings and stands
YAMAKASI CATLEAP Q270 = nice casing/bezel but stand is the crappiest and needs the most work to remove stand for vesa mounting
ACHIEVA SHIMIAN QH270-Lite = casing is the cheapest looking out of the three but gets the job done, stand is pretty good, and vesa mounting is easily accessible
CROSSOVER 27Q LED 27 = nicest casing and stand out of the three, and has a easily accessible vesa mount but tends to me the most expensive out of the three

if you live in the states microcenter offers a korean 1440p monitor not sure what brand it is tho, as i dont live down there.

with any of those above screens a gtx690 will work nice with (hitting 100-150fps without turbo boost kicking in), thats the setup i have, if you were to buy the gtx690 and a 27" korean screen that would cost you around $1300-$1500 leaving you with $1500-$1700 left for the rest of your 3k build

and dont let any of these guys tell you 2gb on the 690 is not enough for 1440p, its all bull, i play any game, crysis1, crysis2, bf3, etc with AA on max and run into ZERO vram problems

thank you all! I am loving the feedback here! btw SniperTeamTango, I just had to say I looked over al 19 pages of your legion thread because that looked so cool! I love how it came out and it makes me wish I knew more about moddeing cause then I'd probably have an amber/ black Archenstone set up >smile.gif

I was doing some research on cpus and it looks like the one I have is ranked horribly low compared to many other options, yet for me it feels like the best thing since yakisoba ramen. So am I going overkill on a rig that will be for gaming/ photoshop cs5? I do a ton of photoshop art and tend to heavily use layers on big canvas. For photoshop I use a medium intous 4 tablet (the professional not the bamboo brand) and I got to say I adore it.

Thanks much! I could help you get started when you get everything together at home (so I can see pics of the case and such)

Your current CPU is pretty solid, but the selected CPU is miles ahead of it. The 3000 series (SBE, IB, and probably IBE) Are going to be amazing chips for years to come. I would not worry in the slightest about selecting an ivy bridge chip.

For any 60Hz single monitor solution you will be fine with a GTX 670/680 for all current games. If you get something with a higher refresh rate, that is the only time a second GPU will matter.

OCZ ZX Series 1250W Fully-Modular 80PLUS Gold High Performance Power Supply
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC128B/WW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Notes: I currently use under 100gbs on my C drive as is and only 401gbs total for everything on here, so the 2TB and 3TBs seem excessive for me at their prices

still not sure about buying a different tower, I like my full tower and haven't found anything that really peaks my interest

I also know nothing about watercooling so while people keep talking about it, with out some examples of what to look for I would be totally lost in that aspect

I'm also looking over monitors and would like one at 120hrtz, other than refresh rate and thus lack of 3D I don't really see why my monitor that I have in my current build is so bad

edit: oh yeah, thats at $2,606.92

The best 120hz monitor that's compatible with Nvidia's 3D is the BenQ xl2420t. Note, do not confuse with the 2410 version, as the 2410 is not very good.
The Samsungs are also good, but if I recall correctly, they're compatible with AMD's 3D implementation.

As for PSU, the Seasonic Platinum you were looking at before is far superior to that OCZ model. If you're going to overspend on overkill, you might as well get the best, and that's the Seasonic Platinum 1000w.

Water cooling isn't a very big deal, particularly as you're going for the 690 (the easy, all-in-one solution in this context) rather than multiple 680s (the tinker for max performance solution). Just get a quiet cooler for your CPU that fits your case, probably a Noctua NH-D14.
