[Semi Accurate] Valve puts apps on Steam, Microsoft still lacks a Windows 8 strategy

Valve is giving Microsoft the single finger salute by offering apps on Steam, and users win. This is well into the ‘about damn time’ category, and SemiAccurate can’t think of anything bad coming from it. Unless you are Microsoft.

That was hardware, and now the software people are coming out of the woodwork too, they don’t like the 30% toll that Microsoft is demanding for Windows 8 software on the their (not an) App Store. Valve was first, Blizzard then chimed in, and everyone else is looking for a way out even if they don’t vocalize their anger. Enter Valve with said way out, and they have Microsoft in a serious bind.

What the hell did I just read? Did Charlie Demerjian just write a non-Nvidia article? Wow it really is the end of the world this year :S

Great quote. Another reason why Windows 8s isn't all that. Faster? Better? Not likely.
Quote:
Microsoft’s DRM laden App store takes a massive cut out of the developer’s profits, forces them to code in proprietary and non-portable languages, is not compatible with current Windows software, and in general, means a ground up rewrite of your code. No, worse than that, it requires a complete re-architecting of the code, complete with coding to Microsoft’s broken new UI paradigms that can’t be called Metro anymore. The end result is code that is more locked to Microsoft than before, and can only run on the latest iteration of Windows.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to gain more money and protecting your money, but ruining the best thing about PC's - closing down the system - is just wrong. To be honest I really do hope that Valve can push game developers to Linux or other developers find their own way there because I've never been that big of a fan of Microsoft and the only reason I use it is because of gaming. OpenGL just needs a bit of a tidy up. tongue.gif

It's an interesting one. You can see the senior M$ people saying, hey lets copy apple and go closed platform. By doing that though, you are making people choose between M$ and Apple, as at the moment there is no real choice for gamers. (not talking about consoles btw)
Also burning bridges with OEMs and people who supply the software which makes people interested in windows seems like madness, but of they do intend on a more closed platform like apple's, they have to start somewhere & there will be fallout.

If you are a gamer, PC is the only option. Apple are making some progress with gaming, but it is still the main reason people stick with Windows.

I for one don't like the sounds of where M$ is trying to go with windows, will be watching this closely.

Kinda puts Gabe's comments a while back into perspective about releasing their own hardware if needs be. Has to have been a shot at M$. Mess with our 40mil PC customers, prepare to face competition in the console market. Doubt they have any plans to do so, but just giving M$ some food for thought.

Heres the problem, M$ is getting greedy and trying to do the whole closedOSeverythinggoesthru us thing. Heres the problem, Apple already does that, and they've been doing it for a while so they have practice with it. And what has apple to show for it? A miniscule desktop/laptop market share compared to Windows that is. But heres what I don't get. Why would you not only abandon your current already working strategy, to try and conquer a tiny portion of Apple's pie, and then put all your eggs in one basket? I don't get it. I really don't.

Ok, so microsoft gets greedy, and gamers switch to linux (which is more open source and anti-locked down than MS will ever be)

....is this an issue?

I hope this fails like Vista. I don't see the majority of gamers going Linux of any kind. Most of us on here are pretty good with tech but the majority of the public has no idea.

I think MS are trying to put people out of the PC gaming market entirely to sway them to their consoles.

That'd be an even dumber strategy (i know you're being sarcastic, I just like discussing) since then they'd throw people potentially to PS3 and the Wii as Xbox doesn't really have as much dominance in comparison to Windows/mac/linux PC market.

Bullcrap article?

The app store is optional for both devs AND consumers.

"forcing" people to re-code from the ground up?

No.

If you want to put an app on the app store it has to conform to certain standards.

Its literally that simple.

Good god why cant people stop with the "sky is falling" trash already?

Also, talking about Microsoft "DRM laden" store while thinking its "awesome" that apps will be on a DRM platform called Steam.

Where are all the sane people.
