[Semi Accurate] Valve puts apps on Steam, Microsoft still lacks a Windows 8 strategy - Page 6

Steam is not a DRM platform. Valve does provide DRM for developers that want to use it, but it is in no way required in order to get your game on the store.
For the record, everyone saying that iOS and Android apps have to go through their respective stores is wrong. Anyone heard of jailbreaking? rooting? If you DON'T want to use the App Store/Play Marketplace, you don't have to.

Same thing will happen with Windows RT. Sooner or later, someone WILL find a way to jailbreak/root it.

As for stock systems comparison...

Windows 8 is open platform + app store, giving more choices to consumers. OSX is semi-closed unless you change the setting to allow any software. Linux is open.

Windows RT (tablets running ARM processors only) is closed. Similarly, iOS is closed. Android is closed unless you change the setting allowing you to install 3rd party apps.

If we're talking about openness then Linux takes the cake. Now if only more games supported it... Among the "main stream" (based on market share and shipping preinstalled on prefabs) OSes, Windows 8 is definitely better than Windows RT, iOS, Android, and even OSX on being open. The problem is it's starting down a road that could lead to it being closed.

That last part is so.... not in line with the others. Sure you can jailbreak an iPhone by jumping through hoops, but the third party setting for Android is right there in the settings. Hell it even comes enabled by default on a Samsung Galaxy S3...

Android isn't a close platform in the slightest and there is no obligation to use the Google Play Store.

95% of the time, you probably only use your taskbar in windows 8 when using the desktop. Maybe opening an application now and then. Windows 8 makes much better use of the desktop then what we currently have.

Thought I'd make this more visible.

So sick of the Windows 8 news by now......

It's gonna fail........ "No, it has under the hood performance boosts".........yeah and that is why Windows 7 performs better in everything, inlucidng gaming?

Sticking to Windows 7 and now 3 FPS performance boost will change that.

*Side steps everything about Windows 8*

I'm really glad that Steam is offering applications. When I do a re-install it should make it fairly easy to reinstall all of my software. I just download the steam program and everything is stored on my account. On a side note though, it's kind of frightening how much power Steam is waving above our heads. First they control all of our games and possibly, they will control all of our applications?

I'm not. I don't like the idea of possibly losing all my apps/games just because I wasn't responsible. It will happen, actually it's happening now. There are a lot of xbox live players who simply don't know how to be responsible, posting in the forums why they got banned and if its possible to have access to the content they bought. This is why I don't trust any kind of appstore, be it Steam or Apple. Unfortunately though sometimes you have no choice but to obtain a title from an app store.

Anyway another thing I noticed in this thread, is why all the Metro hate? Granted same thing happened when people were complaining about Snow Leopard's move to Lion. Microsoft is doing the same exact thing Apple did a year ago, moving to a more touch friendly UI. Heck Microsoft is even releasing the Microsoft Touch Mouse, which IMO is Microsofts attempt at the Apple Magic Trackpad. Yeah people hated it, but they moved on. I can guarantee that the same thing is going to happen with Windows 8. People will rant about the new features they don't like during the first few months, then the complaints will go down and people will get used to it. Think about it, a year after OS X Lion's release, you just don't see people complaining about it now do you?

People are complaining about Metro because it's a bigger jump towards touch-based. The whole thing is meant to be used for touch, where as Mountain Lion still has the desktop feel and still works just fine with a keyboard and mouse.
